for starlingqueen please. Bea was sitting in the nest basket this morning, for her usual 2 - 3 hours while she lays her egg. (Georgie only takes about 1/2 hr!!) Anyway, I was getting concerned cos she had been there for at least 4 hours today. So I examined her vent area, the vent was fine but she had a couple of.... like pin pricks of blood about 2cm away from the vent, and it looked like there was once a feather there. Do chooks get blood feathers? They are losing one or two small fluffy feathers. I washed her bum area with saline and put sudacrem on the two areas. Any light you can throw on the cause of this would be much appreciated.

I presume all birds have blood feathers. As for the blood, sometimes the straining to pass the egg can break some blood vessels. Some eggs can have smears of blood on them. I wouldn't worry too much. If she is taking a long time to lay, the egg may be too large, not properly covered in the smooth outer coating or it could be a shelless egg. You can help her along by bathing her in warm water. Not too deep, just enough to cover her vent. This relaxes them and helps the egg pass. I had to do this with one of my ex batts. Make sure you dry her before she goes back out in this weather though.
