Finally after looong wait, got to see the eggs yesterday!!! And that too 3!!! So happy for Chester and Bluey. But am bit concerned too. Chester's not eating properly. All the time she is inside the nestbox. Comes out for a moment, has some grains and within minutes goes in. All the time she's sitting on the eggs. Though Bluey's feeding her at times, but I cant help but being concerned for her. Moreover, she is throwing the grass, cottons out from the nestbox. Is there anything I can do for Chester to eat properly? She used to have the fruits, eggfood properly, but now, she's not having anything. Could you people please help me with the issues?

Hello budgiegirl01. I'm not experienced enough to answer your question, but feel sure Bluey would be feeding Chester enough. Did you feed her up weeks before she laid? Also, she will only want the things SHE wants in the nest box, so don't worry about her throwing things out! Someone with more experience will be along very soon to help answer your questions I'm sure.

budgiegirl01 what do you mean by "cottons"? It is preferable to have just clean wood shavings inside (not wood dust or saw dust as we call it!), and you want to avoid anything that is a strand or string like material in case the hen or the chicks get their legs or neck caught in it, or try to eat it. The hen will throw out anything she feels is not right or too much, and you'll be surprised how quickly it will soon fill up with her feathers. Do not clean the nest UNLESS it has loads of poop inside, but then only clean that bit out. She will normally come out of the nest to go to the toilet and will want to keep the nest free of poop, and she may eat while she is out. My birds have been nesting for about 2 weeks now, and I haven't cleaned the nest yet, and don't intend to unless heavily soiled. It could cause the hen to abandon it and the eggs. My hens are 95% of the time inside the nest. When the chicks hatch you need to make sure that the chicks legs are not covered in poop, and you can wash the legs in warm water to help it off. Make sure that you have calcium (like a cuttle bone) on offer or oyster shell grit all the time along with fresh water. I mix bird safe charcoal granules in with the oyster grit. It is good to have an iodine mineral block also. Bluey will feed her constantly, so keep the seed, fruits and vegetables coming, and a millet spray every other day. His duty is to keep her fed and although you will see him eat, he will regurgitate his food for her inside the nest, out of view. You will see how well she is feeding as there will be very large poops in the cage where she does come out and go to the toilet. Don't be alarmed, they are huge! If you haven't done so already, read this budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/231/basic-budgerigar-breedingHope this helps.

You can always put some fresh food and a sprig of millet in the nest box for her.

How many eggs have you got now? I have two pairs currently in the breeding cages and both have had 6 eggs each, although one hen hasn't been very good and has damaged 5 of hers, so only has 1 left.
