I read this (on Barries website - www.officialbarrieshuttbudgerigars.com/thyroidenlargement.htm , thank you Barrie) "This is treated by prescribing an iodine supplement. Injectable iodine: 20% sodium iodine in saline for injection, 0.01 ml/budgie once, IM. Oral: Make stock solution of 2 ml Lugol’s iodine in 30 ml water. Mix one drop of stock solution in 250 ml drinking water. Use daily for treatment, 2-3 times per week for prevention." I am already putting the above dilution of Lugols in the water and Blueboy is drinking it. But the part that says: " Injectable iodine: 20% sodium iodine in saline for injection, 0.01 ml/budgie once, IM" What does that mean? Thanks Marianne |

I have been giving him the iodine in his water and he has been drinking it - but I see no improvements, if anything the squeaking is worse.

He has all of these symptoms apart from Crop Distension I think.
Difficulty swallowing
Crop distention
Regurgitation
Weight loss
Lack of appetite due to blockage of the esophagus
Difficulty breathing
Wheezing
A "squeak" during inspiration or expiration
A change in song or voice

5 days so far. How long would it take before I saw an improvement?
Surely he wouldn't deteriorate in the treatment phase??

Lugols Iodine seems to come in lots of different strengths but the information there doesn't seem to specify which strength they are referring to for that mix rate? Could the dosage be too low?

You make a good point Tacey. Perhaps. I am taking him to the vet at 5.30 anyway, if he needs an iodine injection or medication he will get it today. |
