I have been flitting about between posts so much, I thought I'd consolidate Douglas's progress in one post. We have had Douglas 10 days now.
He has settled well into his new cage, always eager to explore new toys as they arrive. I've changed his toys around twice in the last week, adding others and taking some away for cleaning and tidying up. He loves his paper forager and rattan dangly chew (which I have to keep snipping as there are so many stray bits).
He took to his drip feeder within seconds, general consensus is that he had used one before at the breeders. He drinks plenty and head bobs at it as if to say Thankyou!
He gets his fresh food first thing in the morning, so far he has enjoyed lemon grass, pak choy, broccoli, parsley, Rosemary, apple and strawberry. By far his favourite is basil. He gets his egg yolk mid morning and we use sparing amounts of millet for training, it's never in his cage.
He is tame, never worrying about me fiddling with his cage, he step up's to a dowel perch on command, he still needs a bit of encouragement to do this with a finger inside the cage but will do it happily once outside (strange boy). We have rigged up a 'boing' from the living room light fitting and he sits on it happily and twitters away. Once we have got him to fly from his cage landing platform onto the dowel at a distance of about two foot. That was exciting! If he gets stranded he actually waits for the dowel and immediately steps onto it to be rescued, he also responds well to the Hezz technique which I have been practising just incase it is needed. We have had a few crash landings but no injuries, and as each day goes by he gets more familiar with the room.
The day after he appeared to start his moult he was very grumpy. I just kept on talking and practising step ups, much to his annoyance. But that grump passed and he is back to normal now, although very itchy.
He still hasn't bathed, he will peck at the bath and try and get the basil I put in to tempt him, but not much progress on that one. He is also hit and miss with his misting, I had thought he might warm to it but not yet.
He also needs to be covered before he settles at night. I had thought he might settle on his own at some point but so far I think he would stay up all night given the chance.
Anyway, essay over! There have been so many heartwarming and heart-in-mouth moments over the last ten days, this is the seriously edited version. But finally, the OH's beard has never been so clean, Douglas loves preening it!
