Our lutino hen laid her first egg today, unfortunately it is smashed and the remains thrown out of the nest box . I’m pretty sure it was her as the cock bird is quite experienced and raised many chicks last year and was a great parent. Could this be down to her being a first timer? or is she likely to do this to the rest of her eggs?. She is 9 months old. Paul

Well she laid her second egg yesterday and, (touch wood) she is sitting on it and seems quite content in doing so. Early days I know but I’m hoping the first egg getting smashed was just an accident and indeed a one off….fingers crossed Paul

If it happens again Paul replace the broken egg with a marble , often the cock is to blame as he trys to get her out of the box for mating.
