Does anyone have UV lighting for their budgies to make sure they get enough vitamin D?
I am thinking of doing this as it's something my vet advised for Blueboy.
I can only find mega-expensive stuff though and I don't know much about it.
Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks
M

Hey marianne, i use eco bulbs which imitate the sunlight and vitamin D, i have 2 fitted in my bird shed for breeding when the days get a lot shorter like now for instance. i brought mine from BBQ i remember rightly, i think they were around a tenner.

I don't use UV lighting as there is plenty of sun throughout the year.

Where did you get them, anyone that can provide links would be so helpful. I tried googling and it just came up with so much stuff. Information overload. Brain hurts.

My birds spent a few hours a day sunbathing near the window, do people think I should be concerned? What's a good guidline?

My birds spent a few hours a day sunbathing near the window, do people think I should be concerned? What's a good guidline? Sun through a window doesn't give them the Vit D. An open window where the light comes in, yes. You're probably already aware, but just be sure not to cook them. I sit mine out on my balcony as often as I can, in dappled sunlight. Usually when I'm having breakfast. I think they're like humans. Only needing a small amount of regular sun exposure to keep their systems in peak running order. For us, isn't it something like 10-12 minutes per day?

VetaFarm has a product called "Soluvite D" to support birds with no or insufficient access to natural sunlight. I think it is easier rather than going for UV lights.
