Bea is broody AGAIN!!!! What a bother! I've got one chicken that will lay eggs and she has gone broody! She even snuck into the little box that I kept the babies in for a couple of nights, but now intend to use as a nesst for egg laying purposes - but for the babies when they are ready. Well at least I know that it is big enough for a nest compartment. However, Bea is very small now, she only weighs 6lbs and the babies look the same size as her. I just hope she is ok after all the other chicken events I've had with the original flock.

Oh, Bea! It might be her coping mechanism.

Would they do that do you think Hezz? Suppose it could be possible, especially if she is feeling a tad unsettled? Am sure she will be back to her usual self in no time Shirls - the young'ns will be running round her too much for her to keep being broody!

I have the same box for my bantams. My big girls wouldn't get in there. I must weigh them. I weighed Bea the other day and she only weighs 6lbs. The babies are: 4lb 5oz, 4lb 5oz and 4lb 14oz. The big one must be Lola - she is a greedy girl! So Lola isn't far off of Bea's weight, so she had better look out! The problem, well, not really a problem, they are all so fluffy, so they look bigger than they actually weigh. I still can't tell the babies apart, although one of them has her wattles showing slightly, moreso one side than the other too! So funny! How are your two new girls getting on now Wendy, Daisy and Maple?

No clue, Sam, but as they need their own company and then that is gone ....... *shrug* But Shirls, I was trying to find a reason ...... and found this: There are breeds more prone to broodiness, such as the Cochins, Silkies and Buff Orpingtons. from this site, below, hencam.com/faq/the-broody-hen/I didn't find a reason why some hens do ...... I didn't get that far.

It does seem like Shirls has a 'serial brooder' in Bea tho, so she will always be this way Great link Hezz! Apparently, there is no specific reason as to why they are some do and some dont and that's it

Oh Hezz, thank you so much for that very interesting link! No wonder Bea is such a little 'cowbag' to everyone and everything! She really is a mare at the moment! As samwiseg said, there is no reason for them to go broody - it must just be in their genes!! Trust me to get Buff Orpingtons too!! I do feel a little better about it now, knowing the facts. How clever of you to find them! We have an eggciting day today, putting up a new coop for them all. Unfortunately Bea will have to sleep in her wire cage until she comes out of her broodiness, but the babies will have a lovely dry new bed to sleep in tonight!! We can then demolish the temporary home, plant some grass seed and get things back to a 'little' normality. Happy days!

What's this normality, where can I get it please? I couldn't see it on Amazon nor Ebay.

It was interesting, wasn't it? Yeah, that's what I thought, trust those Buff Orpingtons to be one of those prone to this .......... just what Shirls really needs!!!
