It says that sprouting seeds for budgies is better than giving them just seeds. If you sprout seeds for your Budgies how do you do it. I found this video on Youtube where the lady uses Apple Cider vinegar to help stop bacteria growing...is this right and if so where can I buy it as I can't find it anywhere..or is there something I can use as a substitute. Thanks

ACV can be found in most good supermarkets or health food stores. The very best stuff is that which has what they call "the mother" in it ...... it is cloudy and unfiltered, unlike most of the others, but will be labelled to say that it contains "the mother". But you can still use organic ACV that doesn't have quite the credentials as the full-on version, but will do just the same job with keeping the sprouts in a more sterile environment than without. You shouldn't find it too hard to get hold of organic ACV.

Just watched another "sprouting seeds" video and it said you can use bleach instead of apple cider vinegar for killing the bacteria...used in the same way but wash well....is this true?

I would never have bleach anywhere near my birds! The ACV hezz described is what I use. This is the link I found which I think best describes the process: www.birds-online.de/nahrung/koerner/keimfutter_en.htmI use Haiths 'global' budgie seed to which I add wheat grains, buckwheat & amaranth seeds which I get from my wholefood shop. In terms of equipment, I use small plastic (so no rust) sieves and ramikin dishes. I soak the seeds whilst in the sieve in the dish, rinse, use ACV, then leave the seeds to geminate in the sieve, covered, for about 8 hours (usually overnight). They germinate for about 24 hours (so ready for budgies' breakfast) with a few rinses under cold tap during that time. I use ACV again in fresh water for about 15 minutes, then rinse again just before giving to the birds. It may sound a faff at first, but once you get into the routine it is very simple and lovely to have the buds enjoying superfood like this. I also sprout seeds for myself to eat everyday on cereal, soup, sandwiches etc. My current favorites are a sunflower and pumpkin seed mix, chickpeas, wheat & buckwheat mix, alfalfa and quinoa. The book I have learned about sprouting seeds for ourselves is Edward Cairney's 'The Sprouter's Handbook', available very cheaply on ABE Books.

You can use bleach, yes. A tiny amount and washed very well. I personally would stick with the ACV. Bleach is not as bad as we think for animals. The rule is, if the substance turns the water white/cloudy then it's toxic to animals. A weak solution of bleach for cleaning animal equipment and cages is fine and is what I used for many years before getting F10.

Thanks. Can I ask a few more questions please. 1.Do you feed the sprouts every day? 2.Do you mix them with their normal seed or in a separate dish? 3. If there are any sprouts left can they be put in a sealed tupperware and stored in the fridge for a few days? 4. Does anyone feed beansprouts, like you get in Chinese cooking? 5.I've read that Quinoa has a poisonous coating on it, how do you make it safe? Thanks. Can I ask a few more questions please. 1.Do you feed the sprouts every day? There is no reason why you can't. I personally don't as I feed many other things as well. Mine have them once or twice a week2.Do you mix them with their normal seed or in a separate dish? That depends on the bird. Some don't like to try new things so I will put a little bit on top of their seed. Mostly I will put them on their play area.3. If there are any sprouts left can they be put in a sealed tupperware and stored in the fridge for a few days? Yes they can be stored for a few days. Smell them before using. If they have a nasty smell throw them away. To get seed to the smell of fresh seeds as possessed to bad ones, smell the newly sprouted seed, while it's fresh. 4. Does anyone feed beansprouts, like you get in Chinese cooking? You can. My parrots love them as they can hold them in their claws to eat. Obviously not the ones from your Chinese meal. 5.I've read that Quinoa has a poisonous coating on it, how do you make it safe? I don't know about this one as I don't feed quinoa due to the safety concerns. Link to Quinoa info www.cutelittlebirdiesaviary.com/seed-sprouts--an-excellent-addition-to-a-budgies-diet.html
