Last week i got a couple and the next day, the female already went inside the nestbox and claimed it from other females. They then tried to breed, but the male keeps falling of her as he tries and then gives up after. Its been for about 5 days now i think.. maybe they had a succesfull mating when i wasnt there, but i can only observe them for a few hours a day. Would she now be carrying an infertile egg after a failed mounting or does she start carrying eggs after a succesfull mating? In other words.. when should i expect the egg and will it be infertile? Sorry for the questions.. I will keep updating this thread as things go along.

Sorry, but you got these birds last week? Please, take the nest box out and allow the birds to settle before trying to force them into breeding. Give them a few months, at least, and then separate your pairs, into their own cages with individual nest boxes. If you only have the two, then still give them the time to settle into their new home, of at least few months. They need to become accustomed to their new surroundings beforehand, and then need to be given a decent diet to ensure that the hen in particular is in tip top condition to lay eggs, incubate and feed chicks. This needs to start about a month before you wish to start the breeding process.
Please read through the stickies about the thread in this breeding section to find out just what it is you should be doing before sending your birds straight into the reproduction line. They deserve more than being seen simply as a tool for producing chicks.

I did not force the pair to show interest in the nestbox. Budgies have their own ideas when it comes to breeding and they only do it when their conditions are met. And from all i know there is not a set of time to introduce a nestbox. There are breeders who sell and buy breeding pairs with eggs or youngsters who move. The breeder i got them from said it was okay to breed them as i asked beforehand. If the male starts to chirp and sing it means that he is settled.

It sounds like you have made up your mind, regardless of any advice given.
