Hi guys,
thanks for for your support with Bertie over past months ❤️
im posting about Dorothy, she is special needs, as one of her legs appears to have been badly broken before I got her and sticks out the wrong way. So she perches on her knee and ankle joints. We have flat perches which she sometimes likes to lie on and rest. They've still become sore and I want to put some cream on to soothe the pain.
ive searched through this forum and found sudocrem, savlon and dermidex all mentioned for sores. Are they all safe for budgies? Which is best? I though sudocrem was more of a barrier than pain relief, but savlon is hard to absorb and greasy. Never heard of dermidex - any advice appreciated.
thanks all,

Oh poor girl. That's sad. I would think it has to be whatever wouldn't harm her, if she picked at it? Someone on here, will know.

Is it a sore where the skin has been broken, or a red spot, more like a pressure sore? I don't know what dermidex is, so can't help you with that one, although the warnings do say "external use only", but they probably all say that ..... just thinking about Dorothy pecking as the cream. She needs little skater knee pads, poor little dear. While not specific to your needs, some things that can help with joint pains, arthritis etc are aloe, ACV in the water to keep the ph levels in the tissues slightly acidic so the crystals do not form, cinnamon and cayenne. All can be ingested of course, aloe should give some immediate relief, but apparently some parrot can have a reaction to it (I will put the link up in a sec) Tumeric is also a good, and this link also recommends a cream called Hibitane. They also suggest using little pads such as the ones people use for bunions, but only if your birdie doesn't chew on them. Hope this is of some help to you and poor little Dorothy. beautyofbirds.com/arthritisbirds.html

Have you tried wrapping her perches with soft fabric? Make sure there are no frayed threads loose that she can get tangled in.

Rope perches might help her as well. I am getting my budgies confused; I was thinking it was you who had gotten some cotton rope perches for their little bud, but not so ......
That link does suggest padding flat perches with old cloths to help alleviate the hardness ....

thanks everyone.
Yes they are more like pressure sores really. Have plenty of ACV so will put in water from now on.
Skater pads would be perfect for her!! Although she is a little chewer. She does tend to go on the ropes, or she likes to lie flat on the flat perches. Will get some of hubby's old cotton tshirts and cut sips out to wrap perches she likes to go on inside aviary.
Will look up all creams suggested and get her one.
Thanks all.

Wrapped some perches up and she has chosen to go on a wood perch!! Interestingly none of the birds have gone on the wrapped up perches, they must not like my hubby's t-shirt!! Read about Dr Scholls moleskin that you can buy in strips for sore feet, going to try to buy some and wrap it around other perches so they are all soft. Have put ACV in water and put savlon on this morning; she didn't like that and nipped me! Will try to get some hibitane. Does it also act to ease the pain and soothe? Have looked on Internet and it says it's an antiseptic for cleaning skin wounds. Whatever I out on her she won't like it ?

She will take time to get used to them just like everything with our buds.

The shirt is all new to the cage/aviary, so give her time to get used to the new 'thing'. Hopefully she will come to enjoy them as you hope she will. They can be stubborn little creatures, though.

Update - I've bought some Dr Scholls moleskin and some foam pipe lagging, will try to attach pics below. I've put the moleskin on 5 of the inside perches (and got rid of hubby's tshirts) and put the pipe lagging on some of the outside branches. Will see if she takes to them and if it makes things easier for her. Will be interesting to see if anyone chews it away!

I've used Dermidex on my birds and had no problems...Dermidex is an anesthetic as well as a healing cream so it basically numbs the area you put it on...if you put a bit on your lip you will understand what I mean, your lip will feel numb for a while. X

It's not widely available in chemists anymore, don't ask me why as it's brilliant stuff...Boots no longer stock it as they say they prefer to stock their own brand items if they can...find a small independent chemist and if they don't have it in stock ask them to order you a tube...I always have to get mine ordered.x

I've found it on embarrassedtobuy which seems to be an online chemist. Have ordered some, £8 inc postage for 30g. Hope it arrives soon!
