This is a question that is so frequently asked that it deserves a thread of its own in an attempt to give you guidance. The first thing that is needed from you is a good clear photo of the cere. The photo needs to be taken in natural light, no flash, not just room lights etc. A reasonable example is like this If its like this then it is of little use for telling the gender. As usual click on the image to see a full size version. Please note it is not the size of the image, just the quality. While the new thread on gender identification is designed guess what these are. Are they male or female?

Why is the second photo no good? I don't understand. It is a lovely clear photo with the cere in focus.

Because it is in the shade and not very clear. Even though it is in focus the colour is not clear on my screen, where as the first one is.

Are they male or female? Would I be right in thinking male on the left (as you look at it) and female on the right as the cere is lighter around the nostrils?

Yes, you are correct Jane. You have the sexes and positions correct. As for the cere being lighter around the nares I don't actually know the answer. The picture is from a post By our very own expert, BudgiesBuddy, who unfortunately doesn't give the exact details. Looking at the two birds side by side I can see a few subtle differences, but could never say which is which. You must know your budgies and genders, well done.

This post is in two parts. If you want to know all about it read on. If you just want to know what to do about it skip to the second part.
Pictures that appear rotated are usually uploaded from an iPad or similar device. These devices store a great amount of data along with the image data. This data contains the location of where the device was, the time, date and all the exposure data. It also stores the orientation of the device when the photo was taken. That last piece of data is rather important to this problem. When the picture is uploaded to a server that serves the picture to a website it also sends all this extra data along with the picture. Very few web browsers interpret this data correctly including the orientation data. Now an IPad is rectangular in shape and it is perfectly sensible to turn the thing on its side to take a tall picture. The problem is that the picture is now taken in the landscape orientation not the portrait orientation. Therefore when it gets to the webiste i.e. the forum the picture is on its side, it can even be upside down.
Part two: What can be done about it. One could use an image holding host like Photobucket. They have the faciltiy to rotate the picture to the correct orientation. A little more work is required to insert the picture in your post, but itis not beyond anybodies capability. One could also load the picture into a PC or laptop to rotate it to the correct orientation and the one can use the forum facility to upload the picture.

Hi, My little mate Buddy has suddenly begun regurgitating unprocessed seed. He is a very happy and healthy bird so I am wondering what is causing this to happen. Is he just consuming too much food of is there some other reason why this is happening. He has been de-wormed and his surroundings are always kept clean. Would appreciate some advice here. Pauline

Normal boy budgie behaviour - he is practising being a good mate. If his hen was sitting on eggs, it is his job to feed her so she can dedicate herself to incubating. He will have started this because he has, or about to, reached maturity.
