Hi my baby budgie Muffin - I was told by the breeder he was a boy -- has started to bury himself down in his seed container and then he kicks out to such an extent he throws out all the seeds. Every single one. I don't know why he has started to do this but I obviously need to buy a seed container that he can't get into. Please could anyone recommend such a container as this is all getting very wasteful. Thank you.

aronya31, can you post a picture of Muffin so we can be sure he's a boy? The breeder I bought from told me she was selling me a boy, but the budgie turned out to be a girl. Hens are much fussier eaters than boys, and my hen prefers oval-shaped seeds to round ones, to such an extent that she sends seed flying around in the attempt to dig out more buried oval ones further down the pot. If this might be the case with Muffin (look at the shape of the husk shells to see what s/he's eating), my own advice is not to indulge this preference, or you'll never get her/him back to eating a balanced mix of seed. If Muffin is definitely a boy (cute name by the way!), just get a better pot as you suggest!

Our male budgie did this for a few days when we first got him. After a couple of days he stopped. I am not sure why, but he used to kick all the seed from the dish and the sit in it!! The seed would go right across the room!! But after a few days he stopped and realised seed was better for eating than kicking & sitting in!

One of my hens does this all the time, solution was to put her in a vision cage, even the covered top seed holders she would empty it, im getting her ready to breed so iv got an extra open top dish on, have to keep telling her off to stop, she listenings for like 2 minutes :/.

A lot of youngsters seem to do this when placed in a new cage, it nearly always lasts for only a couple of days then stops. It almost looks as if they are having a sand bath in the seed tray, I've tried many times over the years to find out why this happens to no avail, Ive now put it down to one of the little mad spells that budgies suffer from time to time. It's these little things that make your pet special. Shewy
