Been thinking of getting a bigger cage for a while, looking at the Montana Madeira I, I have a big enough cage but would like to go big! My issue is that the only position is in front of a window. I don know weather to get a newer cage like I already have, it's getting poorly, that has to sit in the corner or go for the bigger one and move it around in and out of the window, depending on the weather. Its double glazed so no cold and has blinds which can be shut. I have seen a lot of your pics on here that show your buds in front of windows but I know its not ideal, opinions please?
Also Pickle has just come through an operation to remove a tumour, he is 3 but I was thinking of getting him a friend if i got a bigger cage, I wonder if he is too old really to introduce another one, he spends a few hours every day in his cage but as soon as we are in, he is out of the cage. Opinions also?
Thanks

I am by no means experienced in this situation: getting a budgie friend for your existing Pickle. But I would think a younger bird may be too much for Pickle, but perhaps one of a similr age may be successful. I have two older birds, and through circumstances, (some beyond my control!!) have two younger birds and one in particular is so boisterous and full of energy he drives the other two mad!! Billy Boy is the one, you may have read my other threads on him. But he does have a younger bird to play with from time to time (Billy Boy is in the sin bin at the moment!!). See what the other members think about your situation. Btw Pickle so reminds me of my Harvey who passed a couple of months ago, so alike!! He was an exhibition bird.

Harvey and Pickle could be brothers! Pickle is an English Cinnamon Green and we got him from a BS breeder in Sheffield when he was 7 weeks old. The breeder had won several prizes with his birds and when he saw Pickle a few weeks later he wanted him back! Pickle is large for a budgie, the vet said he had a cockatiel in at the same time and Pickle was bigger!! He is very tame and talks and he really is one of the family. Funnily enough the breeder didn't think it would be good to introduce another bird now as he is so tame he thought he might get very jealous.

I can't comment on the friend part but Bailey is by a window, although a deep bay ledge is between him and the actual window. Do u have a rad next to yours? If no draughts and some warmth, not sure a problem. I have a ceramic water holder hung on my rad, so the air isn't too dry

There is a radiator opposite the wall where Pickle is now, I am not worried about the draughts or cold really, I am more worried it will be too hot in the summer?

Which direction does the window face N, E, S or W? Assuming we get some sun next summer you could always shade that part of the cage that gets the direct sunshine.

So I would expect the sun to be already past its strongest point as it shines directly through the window. Would the cage be wholly in the window or could you place it to left of the window space?

I think the breeder is telling you porkies. He is just jealous that you have Pickle now, and he doesn't. I don't think Pickle is too old for a young friend. I really don't think it matters, the age difference, as long as the resident bird doesn't have any issues that you know of. Sometimes a younger bird can give them a new lease of life. As long as you continue to give Pickle the attention he is used to, there is no reason why he would become jealous.

If we get the new cage, I can use the old one for quarantine Will have to see what hubby thinks. The only thing is most breeders won't have baby birds till the spring so I would probably wait until then, I would always go back to a breeder.
