Moving Budgies to the Spare Room?

Hiya everyone. I'm Morgan, and I'm new here. I've got three budgies: Doc, Rose and Frigglish. Currently they're sharing a cage meant for two or less budgies, and I can tell they're not liking it so much. We haven't been able to get them a bigger cage and we didn't think Frigglish would like being alone in his old cage (his cagemate died a few months ago) while Doc and Rose were all buddy-buddy together.

Now, I've moved out for college and my mom is taking care of my budgies for the time being. Since I took my bed and dresser with me, there's pretty much nothing in that room right now, so we were thinking of moving my babies into there for the time being instead of being cooped up all the time. (We also moved recently, and unfortunately the new house doesn't really have any place to let them free ?) I just have a few questions.

1) we will need to put a heater into the room, as it's in the basement and it gets a little chilly in there sometimes. We're just not sure what kind of heater would be safe for them to be in the room with. We don't want them getting burnt by landing on it or getting too close to it. Is there any type of heater that wouldn't be a danger? Or even something we could put over it that wouldn't be a fire hazard? We've also been looking at heating pads, but I'm not sure how it'd work.

We'll be budgie-proofing the room otherwise (covering up the spaces in the closet door, etc etc etc).

I would really appreciate some advice! Tomorrow I'm going to the pet store to see if they have any suggestions. If this works out, I'd like to keep them in there permanently, because I'm sure being in that tiny cage for most of the time is not good for them and it keeps me up at night worrying about their health!

Hi Morgan. Firstly, welcome to the forum, and hopefully we can help with some of your questions.

Giving the birds their own room sounds like a grand idea. One thing you will need to consider is some sort of safety door system to prevent escapees. Another thing is getting them a UVB lamp so they get the artificial equivalent of some sunshine on a regular basis. This is necessary for their continued good health.

I can't help you with the heater, the need to heat is not something I have ever had to consider, but I am sure that some of our members with aviaries will be able to help with that.

You will need to provide some secured perches for them, things to chew on ...... is the basement able to be kitted out like a bird room of an aviary??? If you are able to provide a rough layout of the room we might be able to help you more with things to make it more bird-friendly.

Most radiator style,, not the bar radiant heaters should be fine.
We have 4 or 5 heaters around our premises and the birds don't attempt to land on them, in fact they avoid them,
They can feel the heat thermal when they fly close to a heater and usually just change direction, even our central heating radiators are avoided by our birds.
In our aviaries we have the long tube like greenhouse heaters that work very well.

We have a radiator cover for ours. A budgie could easily fall down the back otherwise.

I also cover the radiator with a blanket, making sure there's no gap by the wall, so if Squawk does land on it he won't get burnt or trapped.
