Bad news and good news today! Unfortunately the older one has died. There are no signs of the mother or father attacking him... Having a nest box cam has its good points and bad points. We had noticed over the last few days that he was spending most of his time on his stomach where as the younger one has always been on its feet. Such a shame that he made it this far though (not looking forward to telling my daughter after School!).
On a positive note. The younger one has been feeding itself and mum is still helping out too. Hopefully dad will get off his lazy butt and help too. I've got the camera outside the box to keep an eye on her. The quality isn't great because the washing machine was interfering!

Oh dear, sorry to hear about the older chick. The younger one does look lively. One has to take the hard reality that not all the chicks will make it.

Its horrible but I don't want to beat myself up over it. Unfortunately these things happen Meanwhile little one is like a helicopter (on the ground!) and getting ready for its test flight!

The main reason that a bird lays more than one egg is to increase the chances of survival. Obviously the larger the bird the less eggs it can lay. Thinking of the Ostrich. It will be hard telling your children.

I'm so sorry Gareth, I suppose that's nature, but it's really harsh at times. I hope the remaining chick continues to thrive. I also hope the kids are okay when you tell them.

Thanks everyone. It makes this one that much more special now, being 1 to survive out of 6 eggs. It seems confident, fit and strong willed enough so far. I have everything crossed!

Is that strange, was he the biggest, perhaps that's why he was reluctant to leave the nest? If so possibly something wrong so nature doing her job? Or am I completely wrong! Sad whatever, poor little thing, hope the other one grows into a big handsome/pretty thing and you never know, your daughter may take it all in her stride although there's nothing wrong with shedding a few tears! Kids are amazing sometimes.
