Yes he was the biggest. The younger one always seemed more confident. We did notice that he seemed to bumble about a bit and would just rest on his tummy the last few days where the other one was always quite upright. Mum was in and out last night feeding him still so not sure what happened. As you say nature doing her job I guess

I am sorry, Gareth. Telling the kids will be hard; it always is. I do hope they are not terribly upset, but they wouldn't be your caring little guys if weren't. Poor little chickie ...... now we know why he didn't want to leave the nest.

Daft question, but how did the children take the news? Upset no doubt, but are they coping with it?

Thank you. My son hasn't had too much to do with them to be honest and still quite young. He had quite a few questions but just excepted it. My daughter was more upset as we've done everything together with them, like cleaning them out, checking them over and cleaning poo off their feet! The one that has survived has always been alert and nipping us etc. The other one started the same but as time went on would just lay down most of the time. We thought it was just really timid but now maybe there was something more going on with him. My daughter has has been upset but has excepted that it must have been sick and is still loving the other one I would love to know why he died. I was thinking of helping him out of the nest the day before but if I had and then he had died I think i would have blamed myself even more.

Very hard. I agree, you would have blamed yourself

I think it would have been natural to have blamed yourself, but thankfully you don't have that burden to carry. I expected Jack to have more or less shrugged off the loss, that is just his age; Evie on the other hand is old enough to realise the finality of a death.
RIP little chick .....

Isn't Violet such a sweetie? You obviously did the right thing Gareth by just leaving the other baby. Will you breed any more?

I gotta say I really wasn't expecting that bit of sad news Gareth but rest assured it was nothing you did or didn't do. Some of these things just happen because they just weren't meant to be but that doesn't help for the things and people who are left behind But on a positive note thank goodness one of your little buds made it and for first time parents perhaps it was best that they started off small Who knows if you decide to breed from them again the second clutch maybe more as their bodies will know what to expect
