Got a little problem with Lola not laying eggs. She isn't egg bound or prolapsed. So one of the solutions to try is to bathe her in a tub of warm water to relax things. So...... being as the three buffs have slightly 'pooey' butts, I ran a bath with nice warm (pet shampoo) bubbly water and proceeded to catch the relevant chooks. Got Tuppence first, then through the back door, changed my muddy boots, walked through to the bathroom and plonked her in the bath. Told her to stay there while I went and got Lola. Can't carry two chooks at the same time, what with opening and closing doors and changing said boots! On with muddy boots, chased Lola round the garden before catching, then back in doors, changed out of muddy boots and proceeded into bathroom where Tuppence was patiently waiting in the bath. Plonked Lola in the bath. Bear in mind that I put a large brown towel in the bottom of the bath, had very large blue towel ready for after and a hair dryer plugged in point in kitchen, (and placed outside bathroom door). Gave them really nice warm bum washes, takes a while to get all the poo off and there was of course some residue from the mite eggs from previous weeks, which were stuck to feather shafts. Dead eggs, but still a job to get off. Lifted chooks onto towel and got as much water off as possible, then they both had a lovely warm blow dry. Hair dryer doesn't reach far into the bathroom so I had to drag the choooks on the towel over near to the door so that the dryer reached them. Pics to follow: One clean fluffy bum being blown dry:

Chooks bath time - Part Two: Carried one chook and coached the other to walk through the kitchen and conservatory back outside. Stood and watched as sometimes the other chooks pull at any wet/damp feathers they see on the other chooks bums. And they pull them oujt!!! Anyway, all was well until I noticed that Lola was there with a dirty, and very dry bum! I hadn't caught her at all!! So had to repeat the procedure all over again! Good job I hadn't cleaned up the bath/room after the other two!!! It was her bum that needed to be warmed up to lay eggs!!! Needless to say, it hasn't worked yet! It was quite a long afternoon that day.

If you can't tell them apart, what chance have we.

How tiring and patient. But love how Tuppence waited. Bet they loved the blow dries too

Of course it had to be Lola, didn't it? A warm bath being right up a dirty chook's alley??? Who woulda thunk.

Beyond the call of duty, you're a remarkable chooky mum I wouldn't have the patience! It's not really 'beyond the call of duty', it is good 'husbandry' with animals. They don't attract mites and lice and things if they have clean bum, plus you get clean eggs, and of course the main reason initially was to get Lola to lay again. No success on that front still. I do however appreciate that farmers don't have the time or inclination to wash all their chookies!!!! Could you imagine?

If you can't tell them apart, what chance have we. Especially for you Colin: To tell my chickens apart: You have to stand to the right of the chook to check that it is Lola - the right wattle is bigger than the left. You have to stand to the left of the chook to check that it is Tilly - her left wattle is bigger than the right. You have to stand to the back of Tuppence: her tail feathers have blue in. Bea you can tell as she has lighter than the caramel colour feathers, a 'blond' back/bottom feathers. Pheobe - well she's obvious. Hope you like?
