Hi everyone,
I've been contacted by someone who brought a budgie, George, from me last year. They already had a budgie called Papa, who is now 3 years old. For a few days before Christmas Papa had been fluffed up, so his owner contacted me for advice, his droppings were normal and he had been eating fine. So I thought it may just be that he was a little run down due to this moulting - I recommended some extra heat and guardian angel or vitamins in his water. I've received another message from him today:
"After what i already told you about Papa, yesterday his left leg/claw went limp and still is. Having checked, there is no sign of him having cut it or external injury.
His flight, reflexes and other movement still seem ok, though obviously the leg affects how well he can move around the cage, though his intention is clearly still there. His droppings are still normal.
Any thoughts? Obviously we're a bit worried, and had read that a common cause of limpness in leg & loss of leg usage is due to internal tumour."
Can anyone suggest anything?
Thanks,
Salma

My initial reaction was possible tumour too, Salma. But I am living with one, and probably seeing them everywhere. He is a bit on the young side for that as well - they seem to fall within the 5-8 years of age, from my research. But not to say it can't happen. Hopefully Papa is suffering from nothing more than a sprain and will bounce back. Have your friends tried to move his leg around or see if he reacts as though in pain. Poor little leg may even be broken (not all broken limbs are out of line). Other than that, can't help, sorry.

thanks Hezz, would fluffing up be a symptom of a tumour? I didn't think it would be, but not sure. I'm guessing the 2 might be unrelated, but without seeing him I couldn't say for sure.

No, I don't think so either, Salma. Unless it has just started to make Papa feel off. It could all be coincidence that he was feeling off colour and then maybe somehow hurt his leg. It is all guess work isn't it? Without being able to see the bird and feel it.

yes completely agree with you Hezz. I've recommended that they take him to a vet as there's nothing else I could suggest and as you said without seeing Papa it could be absolutely anything!
