I just set the cage up and put Squawk straight in it. He took to it straight away. I thought he might have been a bit stressed, but he was fine. I put a couple of new toys in for him and a new rope perch so don't know if that helped. As your budgie is now in hers I'd just let her be to explore her new surroundings but it sounds like she'll be fine

She maybe sensing some trepidation coming from you budgiebudgie. They really do pick up on our feelings and if you are not readily in love with the cage she may sense this. It may sound silly, but if you almost caress the cage, show it's nothing to be afraid of that might help.

Jane, it is a truly excellent cage - so spacious and with a massive emphasis on width rather than height. Did your Squawk take to it, like, immediately? My budgie is standing very still, seeming to be quite stunned and not a little bewildered by it all.

OP, I will do chirpy kissy noises at the cage, then. (Though feel a bit silly doing it). She's only known the other cage from eight weeks old onwards, and this is sooo much bigger, and soooo much blacker. I'm in love with the cage - it's excellent - and I want her to be, too. At the moment she does seem overwhelmed.

Oh. I'd always thought of my hen budgie as a fearless, bold little bird so this apparent intimidation is quite out of character for her. I'm sure she'll soon come round though.

I'm sure she will be fine in a couple of days. She may feel a bit removed from you. My thinking was that if she believes that you are not afraid and like the cage she will too. Remember the all important word 'patience' It works wonders.

Thanks, OP, you're right. The cage has been her home and her place of safety. This one is totally different. It's going to take a day or two at least before she's flying around exploring all four corners.

I came home from work today and the budgie has not eaten a single seed out of the swivel feeders in the new cage. Clearly she isn't getting the hang of it. I drove around the fields of West Berkshire after work this evening looking for seeding grass. Fortunately I found some and placed this very close to the swivel feeders. She attacked the seeding grass ferociously, but still didn't figure it out about the seed. She must be starving. What can I do? In the old cage, the seed was inside the cage, but now the seed is more 'outside' (although still accessible, obviously, from within). I think it's this change that has thrown her. I'm sad about the new cage. She is grumpier and peckier than usual. I don't think she likes it and she must surely be starving I took the swivel feeder out of its swivelling place and offered it to her in my hand, so she HAS now eaten from it, but not when it was lodged in its proper place.

Do you think taking the feeders out, and putting the feeders from her old cage in, (if that's possible) or putting in alternative feeders higher up in the cage would help her budgiebudgie.

Bailey never used the feeders from his cage as they were low. So I bought hook on ones. Then I bought similar but more shallow. In the same place in the cage. He would not eat from them. Plus a change of colour. I put old ones back.
Were the others clear plastic, and is the new one? In similar place?

Hi, the new ones are clear plastic and basically completely different in every way to the old ones. They are a big part of the cage - there are four altogether and they can't be moved. jellybean, I'll have to put hook on ones in, which slightly defeats the purpose of a large area of the new cage. She might get the hang of it soon but I'll have to watch carefully as there was not a single husk or seed case all day, today. A bit worrying.

I remember when I first put Joey in a Vision cage, he was an only bird then, but he had no idea where the seeds were. He was quite timid at that time but he would watch me like a hawk to see what I was doing. So I made a big thing of putting some seed in the new container and I made sure he was seeing the seed going in the new container. I then put the container in the cage in and left him to it. All the while using the eyes in the back of my head I watched as he made his way down a little ladder that I had put in next to the seed container. Bingo, after that no problem whatsoever. He didn't bother with the ;ladder he would jump off the lowest perch straight onto the seed pot. It was the thing about him seeing the seed go into the container and then the container go in the cage. Perhaps if you can do something similar by waiting until she has not fed for a day. Take the seed pot out of the holder and drop some seeds into the pot making a noise with the seed. I'll bet she will watch you. Slightly overfill the container so that a couple or more seeds fall out when you put the container back in its place. Stand back and wait. I am fairly confident she will find the seed and seed pot.

OP, thank you so much for taking the time to type that detailed and lengthy reply. I can't believe she's so silly as not to know where the seed is. I put a hanging pot which hooks on to the bars with two think spikes, RiGhT nExT to the swivel pots, and she went to the moveable seed pot and ate. It was her preferred pot in the old cage. I think if she were really starving, she'd find the swivel pot all right. I can't help she's just being a fussy hen. Your advice though, about making a big production of filling the proper swivel pot, and in particular, letting some seed spill over the top (and making it auidble), was really good. I have shown her the seed going into the pot, but without emphasising the sound of it or having it overflowing. I think it would help also for the pot I want her to eat of to be the only container in the cage. Thanks again for your advice. I'll see how we go over the next few days and if there's no breakthrough I might be back!
