been chasing one of my cock birds around the garden for the last 2 hours ,got out of breeding cage when i checked on the chicks ,he has now flown south for the winter,my dilemma is his mate now has 5 chicks to feed and another 2 to hatch can i introduce a cock or will she just abandon the chicks and start afresh with the new cockbird,i am sure i know the answer but could someone verify for me regards gerwynmr2

friend of mine had a similar problem but in another way - the cock that bred (ie. the father) was killing the chicks as soon as they hatched and the hen wasn't stopping him. he killed 2 before my friend noticed - he took that cock out and isolated it and put another cock in the cage in it's place. I must stress that the cock he put in to "foster" as a father was a big and very placid/quiet bird and he did wonders and fed the hen to raise the 3 remaining chicks as his own. you could try this with the most placid cock you have if you want but obviously you'd have to monitor them for a few hours to make sure everything is fine. the one he used was an older bird 4-5 yrs old. apart from the hen wacking him off the perch the first time she saw him everything went like clockwork from then on. i'm not saying this will work but is it worth a shot? will the hen be better raising her own chicks herself or does it not matter who the parent is? good luck which ever way you go

It's good that your friend got away with it. But I would say that it maybe a 1 in 1000 incident.
If the cock is aggressive, he will kill the chicks.
If the hen is aggressive she will kill the cock.
Either way there will be blood.
BTW, learned that the hard way.
