Hi. I'm new to the forum and I have two wonderful and gorgeous budgies. One is called Violet, he's the purple budgie and he is definitely male as his ceres is completely purple. But that might change as he's also very young- he has black at the end of his beak and looks to be around 2 months- hasn't even had his first moult yet! The one I'm concerned about is Lapis. I'm not sure what their sex is. Their ceres is also purple, but unlike Violet whose cere is completely purple, Lapis's cere is white AND purple but white only around the nostrils. As in two small rings of white around their nostrils. Moreover, Lapis's behaviour was male-ish as they were not territorial, got hand tamed fairly quickly, don't nibble a lot and was very chirpy but then at the same time, they are smaller than Violet despite being older than them and is also experiencing their first moult. Moreover, in a play fight they proved to be more dominant than Violet. They sadly got retraumatised after being trapped behind a wardrobe when flying and so we now need to handtame them again. Any help would be appreciated.

From your description, Lapis sounds to be a hen, but for myself the photos are a little too far away to get a good look at the cere. If they have had a scare, it is possible you will need to start from scratch, go back to the basics and take it gently, slowly until you are sure they are ready to start to trust you again. It really depends on how traumatised they found the whole experience, as to how long it might be before they start to trust again. How long ago did they get caught behind the wardrobe?

Sorry for the wait; I have no internet and steal it from my friend's houses. But are these better?

They were caught behind the wardrobe a week ago, they are getting better now. Still not handtamed but they seem to be more comfortable with human presence now.

Glad that they are doing better, my boy went behind the bed frame the first time he flew out without permission. He fell between the wall and head board down to the floor. I was so scared, but he came running straight out from under the bed, it was not funny for me at the time like it is now..he ran to my hand(that was filled with seed, I was taming him at the time) and he went right back in his cage! Now he only comes out with permission, and he goes to stand on the door before he tries to take flight. No more mad dashes for this boy! So what I am saying is don't worry too much, just keep doing whatever it is you are doing. Might take a while, or no time at all. Im finding that my girl is nothing like my boy and is very timid, while he is very outgoing...having a bit of trouble with her opening up to me... But with time and patience and very careful movements we will gain their trust. I wish you even more goodluck for the future.

Sad news: Lapis has sadly passed away.
The vet was furious and told us that she (he did indeed confirm that Lapis was a hen) had been sold to us sick as we had only had her for little over a month.
