Hello I have an eight week old stunner called Atticus who isn't scared at all. He'll hop onto my hand happily. However, I have left millet in his cage to give him a taste of it and he's not interested in it. When I've tried to offer him some in my hand but he doesn't take it. But he is happy to be picked up or travel on my hand/finger. I'm concerned that when he has an off day and I need to tempt him back to his cage, I don't have anyway of doing that. Any suggestions gratefully received pls.

Hi jennaj, welcome to the forum. I don't know a budgie that doesn't like millet Is there anything else that is a favourite with him, any favourite vegetables, you could maybe try those. Usually budgies are introduced to millet from an early age, the breeders give it because it's easy for the chicks to eat, so i'm surprised he isn't interested. Try cutting a small piece off, and while he is out on your hand try to tempt him then. Millet should only be given as a treat though, he should still get plenty of fresh veggies.

Mine had never seen a bit of millet before so he had to learn what it was. Once he finally sampled it there was no going back!

If he has seed in his cage then he will be eating millet already, it's a key ingredient in budgie seed. So it's probably that he doesn't recognise it in it's natural form. Give him time and he will discover it.

Thank you for all your responses. Also, from what age shall I introduce other foods. The breeder said five months old? And what veggies etc did you introduce? 😍

I would start with the veggies as soon as possible. If you go to the Home page, there is a heading "Budgie Feeding", you will see lots of suggestions for fresh vegetables to feed your little bud, broccoli, sweetcorn, carrot to name a few.

Bailey never wanted to try millet in the early days either.. but once he had, which was a while down the line, he loved it. But I used to take off one little sprig at a time. he didnt like the whole thing, too big to look at I think.
