Ok worring again. As you may rember i mad a post about Ada having a bad foot, wekk vet gave 0.05ml of baytirl once a day and i took him back after 3 weeks for the check up, vet was pleased it looked better and thinks i am right that it is caused by him putting more weight on that foot all the time and asked if i had any antibiotics left over and i said i had loads left still, and he said i mught as well use the rest of it up, however when i got home i measured it out and there is enough there for over another month, he had a months worth allready and im worried about using the rest as i dont want to over do it and end up with him getting restant to it or someting. Would 2 months+ be too long to be on anitbiotics for a budgie? He hasnt had any this week would it be best to just leave the left over meds. (I have an infection im my toe that is resistant to antibiotic, had loads of cources for it and it dont go and now i cant have any more for it so im worried this will happen to ada.)
Ive also noticed Ada's behaviour is going down hill, he has statred biting me sometimes when i go to give him belly rubs (ada loves belly rubs normaly) and he is getting stroppy and shouting and screaming more. Not sure if its related to having to restrain him to give the meds, or if its to do with the change in routien due to the new pup or if its age related as he has been feeding his rope toys a lot latley of if its a mic of all 3.

usually where i live ,the vet gives a week worth of anti bacs (for any animal), a month seems a leap personally, and two month i agree with you seems a lot, especially if it's just "to use the rest up", if he's looking better, i don't see why he should need more anti biotics, but im not a vet .

Prolonged use of antibiotics wrecks the budgies gut flora which disables proper digestion of food stuffs. Unless the budgie has a definate or urgent need of the antibotics then I would stop use of them, then give a weeks course of a good probiotic in the water to help replenish the birds good gut flora. I have a budgie on prolonged use of baytril but it has been recommended to do 10 days on it and 2 weeks off it just to allow the budgie to regain some gut health. Also prolonged use without a break will make any bacteria immune to the antibiotic, rendering it useless if needed for further treatments.

Something like gaurdian angel could give him extra vitamins to fight of infection ,and at the same time restore his gut flora, as Nat was mentioning .

Just looked it up and it does sound good, can u use it as a preventativeas well? my birds have beak and feather desiease and eagle also might haveliver probs, so they are on milk thisel in there water to help with that. wondering if they might help them stay ashealthy a possible

I think marianne gives her birds a little bit mixed with their food ever now and then .(if i remember rightly) I certainly can't see it doing any damage. It wont do much for her liver though

I think GA is used more as a pick-me-up for an ill bird. I know it can be given as an occasional tonic but it isn't meant to be supplied as a constant additive.
