I've always given my Budgies mirrors but when i collected my two new ones on Friday i was told mirrors confuses them and gives them dementia. Is this true? I don't know whether to get them one or not now. Thanks.

personally i wouldnt believe that, budgies love playing with mirrors and perfect for a single budgie to play with so he feels as tho he has a friend, all of my pet budgies have always had mirrors to play with and have never shown any signs of dementia!! how u detect dementia in a bird i wouldnt have a clue but my budgies seem perfectly normal!!

Okay, thanks. I thought that too and vets have never mentioned anything before - but don't know if they would. I might get them one then, although they do have eachother. Is it normal for them to be so quiet? My others have always been noisy but maybe it's cos these are so young cos they haven't tweeted or anything except twice.

they r more than likely quiet because u have only just got them, they will be settling in still and unsure of their new surroundings. after a week or so they will become more vocal and u will c them eat and drink more often. its always good to have toys for your birds but seeing as u have 2 they will more than likely play with eachother

Some people don't like mirrors for budgies because some can become obsessed with their reflection and prefer their imaginary friend in the mirror to bonding with their owners. I think it depends on the bird, and if there are other birds around for them to play, flirt or mate with.

Totally agree with budgiedan, your little buddies are still settling in. Did you get them from the same place? If so, and they already know each other, they should settle in quickly.

I would remove every mirror and replace it with another budgie

i have a large mirror in my aviary and my budgies love playing with it, but I would never put a mirror in a cage with a single bird - I've had so many people bring budgies to me who have become psychologically damaged due to the lack of response from the 'other budgie' in the mirror. Considering you have 2, I'd say there's no harm in having a mirror in the cage but I don't really see the point of them - when the budgie in the mirror doesn't respond to your budgie, they'll move onto the budgie that will i.e. the other live budgie

I wouldn't say that mirrors give them dementia but mine do certainly become obsessive about mirrors sometimes and when this happens, I take them out.

Gives budgies dementia! lmao! I do believe that you should have lots of different toys and not masses of mirrors, and definitely not give mirrors to a budgie on its own if you want it to bond with you but the dementia idea is loopy One of my budgies, Ozzie is obsessed with mirrors so I do limit his time with them but the rest are happy enough to play with each other and destroy their shredders toys. I'd suggest not giving them any mirrors for quite a while anyway if you want them to bond with you, plus there are plenty of other toy options out there for our feathered friends but the person that told you they cause dementia was definitely over-exagerating.

A single budgie will be more friendly towards human if he didn't have a mirror and will learn to talk a lot quicker.

All the budgies I have known have had mirrors and always loved them and never suffered any health issues. You can never have too many toys for budgies! If you have just got new a new bird/birds, we have always found that you should start off with not very many toys until they get settled in and then introduce one at a time thereafter

I wouldn't say that mirrors give them dementia but mine do certainly become obsessive about mirrors sometimes and when this happens, I take them out. Same here, Marianne. It all depends on the individual bird, I think, and owners being vigilant. If the toys and cage set-up are changed around each week with the weekly clean, and some weeks there is a mirror and some weeks not, I don't see a problem. If the bird gets to the stage where it is trying to feed the mirror friend - time to remove the mirror.

This is one of those issues where everyone is correct. Mirrors can be a bad thing for budgies, but it depends on the bird and its situation.
