I got him back in. Have you any tips on taming him after what's happened because I've scared him

You have to wait until he lands then grab him carefully. . I went close to him and as I was about to grab him he started to fly again MMM They do that!

My idea is: Talk to him quietly (tell him he can't come out again till he promises to go back in) and get him to sit on your finger while in the cage so he is used to being on/near you.

Have you covered his cage for the night. If not I suggest you start to do that early on. For tonight though I would just cover the cage on the top, back and two sides. Leave the front open. Let him calm down as he will be well and truly stressed right now. From tomorrow you need to get him used to you, so start talking to him from outside the cage, I'm not suggesting you get in the cage at anytime. It doesn't matter what you say. Whenever you look at him start winking and blinking your eyes. He will eventually do it back to you. I'm glad you got him back in the cage, well done.

So glad he didn't harm himself while on his little adventure I think you were more concerned, he was enjoying himself!

For my birds, I had to unfortunately invest in a minnow net (a little net used for tiny fish) It's probably not the best but I've never been able to hand tame them and it's the only safe and quick way to get them down and put back. They're sort of used to it. One of mine I can calmly place it over him and he'll hop into it. It's a last resort thing though. Usually I just open the doors to their aviary and they go back in eventually.

A net sounds ok to me, we see in nature programmes people using bags to weight little birds and I'm sure they're a lot tougher than we sometimes think, as long as they don't get stuck in places they shouldn't

When Squawk has got out I just let him fly round the room until he tires which doesn't take long. Squawk doesn't like being out anyway, so he tends to fly back to his cage pretty soon. He will get on a perch and I'll put him back inside. The important thing is not to panic. Get the bird used to stepping up on a perch and he'll be relatively easy to get back in. I tried Squawk stepping up when he was in the cage initially.
