So about four months ago I got Bose (blue) and Fermi (yellow). They have bonded quite well with each-other and with me over these months, cleaning each-other, kissing, head bobbing, and so on. I am sure Bose is a male by the heavy blue color of his cere, and I figured that Fermi was a female because of how they seem to have romantically bonded, her timid personality, and because her cere is pinkish in some areas. So far Fermi's cere hasn't turned brown though, even though it seems like they are going through a bonding/romanticizing process (they spend hours kissing and bobbing, but also sometimes fighting/bickering.) I plan to get another pair of budgies this week which I will house individually in separate cages, but maybe I will house them in the same large one eventually. I want to be sure about the gender and ages of Fermi and Bose before I do that though. This is what they looked like when I got them in late May. The first of the next set of pictures was from two months ago. The second, third, and fourth were within the last month. Don't worry, I am very alert when I have them outside! They are well tamed and stay on me until I take them back to their cage, wings are clipped, temps were about 80F that day. Typical grooming behavior started about two months ago. First it was mostly Fermi, but then Bose started reciprocating.

Males can and do bond with other males. They become best buddies, preen and feed each other. As far as I have observed male/female bond is not quite so close. In my opinion it would be a bit cruel to split the pair into separate cages now. I'm not going to harp on about wing clipping, but I will say I don't like it. It's like you having your toes cut off so you can't run away.

Welcome, they both look like boys to me.
It's not a good idea to take them outside free of a cage. I know their wings are clipped (most of us think that is cruel by the way) But it would take a couple of seconds for them to get frightened and a predator to carry them off.

It's like you having your toes cut off so you can't run away. Thanks a lot! I don't intend to separate them. They are far too attached for that! I can't separate them without them calling for each-other anyway! I learned that from one on one taming sessions. They need to always be together. I meant that the new pair I get would remain separated until they were used to each-other, and then I would integrate the new pair into the main cage (which is big enough to house four at least.) I was more worried about them getting jealous and injuring the new budgies. It is very nice to hear how closely males bond! When I first got Bose an Fermi, Bose's wings were clipped and Fermi's were not. Fermi was very timid and would fly full-force into obstacles (walls especially), risking his ( ) health. We opted to partially clip at first, enough for him to fly to nearby ledges without being able to lift high enough into ceiling fans or walls. Now that the winter months are coming, that they are much more well tamed, and their main room will be budgie proof I intend to let them keep any new flight feathers. I try to get them as much exercise as possible nevertheless, especially since I am still working on finding them a stable and healthy diet they like (struggling to get them to eat vegetables and pellet.)

They do look a fine pair of budgies. I'm glad you are going to let their wings grow back. I hear what you say about them crashing into walls etc, Mine still do it and they are much older. If they are unable to get up to full speed they seem safe enough. I have introduced females to my males at different times with only a little sorting of the pecking order, but no bother abut territory. The ones I have taken in have been rehomed so not really young.

Both look like boys, I find the boys love to bond, I find in and avairy with many birds they may have a female friend but will have a couple of male buddies that they also hang out with preening each other 👍🏼❤️
