So Olympia (yellow) and Riley (green) have lived here for about 6wk now. At this point, I can put my hand in the cage, flat, with treats on palm and both will come over and eat. Both will sit on my hand, either to eat, or after they finish eating, sometimes they just sit there briefly. In the pic, that's one of my sons, w Riley sitting on his hand. Nev90 here suggests that Olympia is a female, which we were leaning towards anyway. She is generally quieter and definitely the subordinate, which I don't know if that puts her sex into question again. She's a bit braver, usually the first to come over to my hand, but then Riley will chase her off. We think Riley is a boy, because his cere seems to be turning blue, tho still white around the nares. He's noisier and more aggressive, again, if those are girl traits maybe we are wrong. Regardless of sex, they are definitely becoming more comfortable with human hands, and I'll keep working on it until we get to where they can leave their cage safely.

It's good to see that they are getting used to hands inside the cage.
Also, it would be better for the birds if the perches were fitted across the cage rather than lengthwise, you could get more in at different heights and also different material/sizes, such as natural branches.

Hope you don't mind me saying, but I would also get rid of that yellow snuggle hut, these are a danger to budgies, they can get very ill or die if they ingest the fibres.

stevex and jellybean have both mentioned things I was going to - the perches, run them across the cage, back to front. Gives the birds more room to move about and you are not so likely to have to worry about poop on the perches. Natural tree branches are much better for their feet as well. And those snuggle huts, yuck are a waste of money, and dangerous to the birds. Budgies do not need somewhere to sleep, except possibly a swing. A few more toys wouldn't go astray - when you move the perches to run front-to-back you will find you have more room to put toys. Just don't put them right in the middle of the cage as the birds will not be able to flit side to side if there are things hanging in their way. Good work on the progress so far, and it's great that the kids are truly involved.
