Hello. Bob and Bluey have 2 chicks, chick 1 is 23 days old, chick 2 is 20 days old. These are the first chick any of us have ever dealt with. I will get to the point and hope that someone can give some advice. Chick 2 had a problem with its legs and I have managed to fix them using the make up sponge method, and the chick is doing great, chick 1 has a much bigger problem, I honestly dont know how I missed it, but one little leg is tucked up against his tummy, and the other is pointing backwards, I thought the chick had problem one time, but when I checked on them it seemed ok, its only the last 2 days I have realised just how bad it is, the chick is growing well, getting feathers, Bob is feeding them both, but it is so sad to see the chick like this. I phoned the PDSA, for advice, but we have to register, then get an appointment, this could take a week or so, so I am turning to you guys, who have helped so much in the past, please dont say put the chick down, as I would only do that if it was in pain, and I dont think it is, the chick can move around, and move the legs, is there anything that can be done to help, as Im willing to try anything, if not I am going to have to adapt the cage and surroundings for him, if any one can help I would be eternally grateful, a very sad Bizzly

hi bizzly,i have a young cock with splayed legs really bad he is healthy flies around like a lunatic i call him kamikaze,he feeds well and has learnt that he can perch as long as one leg is grabbing the mesh of the flight, you willbe amazed as to how they adapt ,just as we adapt to physical problems hope this will put you at ease regards gerwynmr2

Thank you that makes me feel so much better, if the legs cant be fixed at least I know the chick can have a good life, and I will make sure that he/she does just that.

So sorry, Bizzly. It has been a tough road down your first breeding path. I think you would be right in that it is too late to correct the leg, but as Gerwyn has said with experience, they seem to be able to cope quite well with different disabilities, especially regarding legs. Hope they continue to grow and flourish for you. Photos?

Thank you for your reply, I thought it might be to late to do anything for the poor little thing, but as long as I know the chick will cope ok, I will do all I can for him/her. I will take some photos today and post them

Bizzly you must take a look at your breeding arangements , all nest boxes must have at least one inch of bedding with a deep concave, shallow nest boxes will contribute to splayed legs, a couple of glass marbles will help support chicks.

Thank you to everyone for the replies and advice. I admit to being a novice, and not really doing my homework on all this, the aim was never to breed, but Im afraid love conquered all. I do now realise that what Barrie said about the nest boxes and concaves is all true, I didnt know that the concave in our box was not good, Im not making excuses, I thought all was ok, but to be honest there is hardly a concave at all, so I am getting rid of it as soon as I can, I feel sad that that this has happened when it could be prevented, I thank you all for your advice and input.
