Something I thought today as I was watching "new bird" (no name yet) eating some of the millet in his cage. I've been doing all the proper stuff for a new bird: winking, soft voice, and I have managed to hold some millet that he eats from. It's only day two and the only reason I had my hand in his cage was to fix the millet. He has plenty of seed mix when he gets more comfortable.
But when can I start introducing fresh foods? Obviously I don't want to scare him with some new thing just yet. I'd like to get him started in a timely manner, though.
Honestly, I feel so much like I'm ignoring him because I don't want to overwhelm him right now. I check on him, talk and sit for a bit, and leave him be. The way we have everything set up it's not like he's in a room alone in the quiet. He's in OH's "office" (game room). So there's music and some activity without a lot of traffic and loud noise. He can see the living room and hear Basal, but it'll probably still be awhile before he responds.

I would start straight away; just hang up a piece of something leafy - basil, dandelion, asian greens or the like. Don't have it too big. Or you could put a small dish with some chopped veggies in it, along with his millet so if he goes to eat his millet, he might just pick up a bit of fresh food as well. You can also start he on his stepping up, as he is already nibbling the millet out of your hand. Short periods of time more often work the best. 5-10 minutes here and there throughout the day and he will soon get used to you coming and going and nothing bad happening to him.
