I haven't had my budgie long, but he started having what I can only describe as a 'fit' the other day, -in this episode, he was jerking his head strangely and going crazy, his eye went all funny with gunk coming from it. I know it sounds awful that I didn't take him to the vets, but I was advised that vets often can't do a lot for birds and it costs a lot (and I'm short on money!) The thing is, he calmed down from this thing, and he seemed to be doing okay. I thought his preening has seemed quite erratic since though, but after thinking he was getting better -he has been eating fine and seemed ok, he has had two more fits. I want to take him the vet but is it worth it -anyone know what my budgie could have? And if this is a treatable thing??
Currently he is eating his millet and he is still scared of our hands when we tried to gently pick him up (we haven't got him hand tame yet) Sorry my post is long, thank you for any replies.

sorry to hear that your budgie is poorly!! I don't really know what is causing the fits...but do you have any metal bells or bare metal that maybe rusty!! if your budgie has been nibbling them it could cause a problem!!! or it could be an internal problem like the brain etc!!!! try and keep him calm and warm just after a fit!!

Thank you both for replying! Think I'm gonna take him to the vet tomorrow and see if they can identify it.

Hey everyone, Now I hope people don't hate me for this, but I cancelled the vets. The reason being he has improved much! He is looking far more like his normal self, and has been very energetic the last couple days. His tweet is still not always so loud, but it's getting a lot louder than before.. check this video I took this morning.. tell me if he looks unwell to you..
And he even sang! I'll be keeping a good eye on him though. And thanks for all your help everyone!

Happy to hear that Theo seems to be feeling better. If that should change, I know you will get him to the vet. Sometimes the trip to the vet is more traumatizing than the illness. Keep us posted.

Thanks budgiefriend. Yes, I thought this too, I didn't have the heart to put him through all that when he seems so much better the last couple days. He is possibly preening a bit too much.. but like I said I'll be keeping a close eye on him.
