Today my budgie showed me that he wanted to get out of the cage while I was training him to step up. He kept staring at the open cage door and started calling and when I backed away a little he got closer to it and started looking out with a very interested way I noticed he was hesitating to fly off but I didn't let him. My budgie isn't tame yet, he knows only to eat from my hand and to step up only if I push my finger into his chest. He's not scared of me but doesn't trust me yet and can freak out soemtimes so I don't know if it would be a good idea to give a time out yet. But he has a very narrow temporary cage, it would be good for him to fly a bit. What do you think?

Hello and Welcome Daeva, It is always a worrying time when you let your budgie out for the first time. If you can it is better to let the budgie out in a smallish room that is not cluttered with furniture and things. It is highly unlikely that your budgie will come back to you on command, or even go back into the cage by itself. If it does either of those things good luck. Be prepared to follow the budgie around with a spare perch in your hand for it to step on to. Follow not chase. Make sure you have plenty of time otherwise you will start to get frustrated and pass this on the the budgie. You may find a smallish piece of millet will help. You can always give the millet to the budgie once you have it back in the cage, as a reward. Stay calm and your budgie will feel this and will not be as afraid. Good luck.

Thank you OP for the advice, after second thought I think it's better if I wait a little bit cause the only room I can let him in has a spot that i can't reach even with a perch and I don't want his first time out to be a bad experience and lose the little trust he placed in me.
What a cute little fella jane! But even if he's untame he does seem to trust you that makes it easier.

It took time Daeva to build his trust. Like OP suggested millet is a good training tool. I spent hours gaining Squawk's trust with millet and also his favourite toy penguin Percy. If you look closely you can see Percy on my shoulder. I got Squawk to step up on a perch as he's more comfortable with that than my finger. I did that before letting him out as it can be stressful for the bird and yourself if they are panicking. Good luck.
