Sorry no picture! While out walking our little terrier Wendy this morning, my husband saw huge flocks of swans in V formation, flying North. He said it was an amazing sight (I missed it ) but are they migrating 'out of season', isn't it too early/late or warm. As you can see my knowledge is sadly lacking but I had a vague idea they usually migrated in spring?

With mute swans, some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England. There are of course several types of swans, Mute, Bewiks and Hooper. As far as which ones stay where I don't recall, but I believe we do get all of them at some time in the U.K. They migrate in the Autumn and the Spring, so the ones you saw milliej may even have just been moving to a different site. I love to see them (and hear them) in flight, you were very lucky to see them milliej!

They must have been a beautiful sight Jean. I'm not sure about the migration patterns nor much about swans in general. As Shirls says they may have been re-locating to another marshland or something like that, or they know something we don't.

On the lagoon near us there are two resident adult swans. At this time of the year they make several flights, whilst teaching their young and eventually when the time comes they will fly them to a nearby river and leave them returning alone to nest and have their next lot of cygnets. It is indeed a great sight seeing them in flight although sometimes you do wonder if they have left enough room to land!

Talking about geese, this is a photo we took a couple of years ago at the Shoreham airshow. The geese flew in a v formation in front of his small plane, was incredible to watch -

The weather makes such a difference and it's been terribly gloomy of late.

I assumed you'd see so much being near the lake district milliej Weather last couple of days has been really sunny and bright but so cold! We live about an hour away from the 'popular' Lake District National Park, we see some lovely birds when we go up the coast to near the Scottish border and inland yes, the lakes, plenty of swans, geese, ducks and other birds there. Get fed regularly by the tourists (not me or the locals so much). They do sell proper bird food though to try and discourage feeding bread!
