As it says really! Newbie here - am looking to get a budgie and would like yo get a Vision cage. I'm thinking the medium (green) would be better than the small (blue) but was wondering if it's possible to buy a single height then extend it to a double/tall by adding panels later? I ask only as I thought it would be easier to attempt to tame a budgie in the shorter cage. Thanks for any help.

You could do it that way, but you may find it more expensive than getting a double height and build it to single height. You will then have the panels to extend it when you want.

As far as I know. I have not tried it, but I can't see a problem. It is possible to buy the separate panels, so I would think it can be done. I'll have another look at the pictures on the websites. I have had a single story Vision cage ad I was going to extend it, but passed it on before I tried it.

I can't say for definite that you can do as I suggested. I can't find anywhere that says you can and I can't find anywhere that says you can't. I'm afraid you will need to take the chance.

29/02/12 |Alison HUGE SIZE AND EXCELLENT VALUE My cage was delivered in superfast time.Thank you zooplus. The cage came flatpacked and was a bit fiddly to put together but once done, it's absolutely perfect. My little budgie has plenty of room to exercise and explore. The cage is HUGE and EXCELLENT VALUE FOR THE MONEY and could house several budgies, although I only have one....at the moment! The top of the cage can be removed to make the cage half size if necessary....thinking about taking the budgie on holiday! For some reason by bird hasn't used the drinking and feeding cups provided but I do have other pots in the cage. The base is very deep and catches the seed and feathers very well, so there's little mess outside the cage. I use large sand sheets that fit in the base of the cage, under a wire grid. 4 opening doors are very handy so you can get to all areas of the cage. The doors act as flat landing perches when hinged inside the cage or as external ladders when they are hinged outside the cage. Simple but effective idea. I was going to buy an indoor aviary but so glad I bought this cage instead. I'd certainly recommend it. I found the above review on Zooplus for the cage we have been talking about. So the answer is yes you can do it.

I'm not sure why you would want to make it taller. Budgies prefer longer rather than tall. They fly from side to side rather than up.

That's great OP - many thanks! The consensus seems to be get as large a cage as possible and AFAIK Vision can't be extended widthways. So extending upwards would seem to be the only option - or getting the smaller cage.

If you have room for a cage with a bigger footprint, do get one. A cage can never be too wide for budgies; as SQ has said, they need width for exercise, rather than height.

I would not disagree with the wise ones, but I have noticed my budgies, excepting Joey, do like to use the whole of the cage. The Hamberely is quite tall as well as wide. They do fly up and down as well as side to side and diagonally, climb, abseil and other tricks. The concept of getting the biggest cage that space and finances allow is the best thing. However sometimes compromises have to be made. The young lady specifically wanted the Vision tall cage so that she could build it to half size and when ready add the second storey at a later date. It appears that this can be done.

I'm all for width of a cage too lila, and get the biggest you can afford (to at least take 2 or 3 budgies) as I'm sure at some stage you will want to get another one!!!! Once you have the budgie bug!!

Thanks for the info OP - I think I will indeed stick to my original decision of a medium, tall Vision, as it seems plenty big enough for one budgie. The large vision I see is not recommended due to the bar spacing, so the medium vision is the most suitable.
