Hi! So i got him about 24 hours ago.. and he seems to being doing pretty good! I want to know what the next steps would be. He isnt biting at all and calms down once he perches on my hand (and has willingly walked on it himself a few times) He seems to gain a lot of confidence when I have him out and I let him listen to some budgies chirping. He runs around and preens his feathers. One thing im not sure of is his beak moving. He does it when i have him out, he'll kind of open on close his beak lightly and move his tongue around. What does this mean? Is it a nervous thing? He is tweeting to himself in his cage and playing with his toys already, so im assumming he's doing good? He's anywhere around 10-12 weeks from what I was told! Next steps to help him gain more confidence with me would be apprecited!

Update! He hardly seems afraid around my hand, a bit at first but once he': on its like he remembers! I had him out with me for around 30-45 min and he explored a bit, tried flying a bit and decided to wait by my leg until i let him step up. He stayed on my hand perfectly for a good 15 min before my hand started cramping.. lol.

It is really hard to know how he is going, with his clipped wings. ![;-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/squint.png) But .. at least he seems comfortable with you; some birds are quite traumatized by having their wings clipped, particularly so severely. Getting him used to stepping up and down, onto and off your finger, is the first step. Once he is flying again, getting him to do this while you take him back to the cage, when he is out and about, that is the next challenge. I am glad to read, from your other thread, that you intend to allow his flights to grow back. What is a bird without the ability to fly?? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

He is doing great this morning! Stepping up without me having to even touch him. Likes to preen while sitting in my finger and even shook his tail a little! He was in his cage this morning and I started singing, and he chriped along with me! I cant wait for his wings to grow back. I feel so bad about it. He hasnt eaten though.. i've got two different food bowls in there with what he was eating at the store, and have tried showing him where it is a few times. How long is normal for him to not eat?

Are you sure he hasn't eaten, or just that you haven't seen him do so? Are there no husks in the seed pot? Generally it doesn't take too long before they are happily eating away; usually it is drinking that has people worried, as the bird won't drink while a predator is in the room until the bird is more settled. They will be drinking, but not in front of you.

Update! So.. he will step up no problem, he will even run to my hand and step up without coaxing if hes on the ground.. But whenever hes on my hand or shoulder high up, he flies away! Most the time to just sit somewhere else.. im confused! He seems to trust me, but how do I get him to want to spend time with me? Its like he perfers to perch somewhere else.. (He's eating great now! Not so sure about water..)

You cannot make him want to spend time with you; just like any other friend, there has to be give and take, and lots of trust happening before that happens. It really has only been several days; trust takes time to be built. You need to be patient, and accept what he is prepared to give at that particular time.
