Hi all, i was a bit worried after logging in just now and seeing your comments. Especially after we went to the breeder this morning and bought a little fella. I have uploaded a photo just taken and hope he looks ok. He is certainly active, and eating. Not that tame, but he has only been home an hour. Meet Sydney! his flight and tail feathers are shorter than they should be!! you will see the difference if you compare to your other budgie!! PS he looks like a dom pied!!!

if he is 6 - 7 weeks old should all his feathers have been formed? Feeling a bit bad now and certainly doubting wether she should have picked him. breeder said that the feathers will come through. She had about 4 of the same, all looked ok, she said that the feathers may just take time.
Thanks for the replies, just a bit worried now.

hi there grjones ,i shouldnt worry to much ,he should be ok in a few weeks time ,it is feather stress or as some say french moult, most feathers should grow back when he moults out heres a pic of 2 brothers 7 weeks old as you can see the one on the perch has all tail and flight feathers ,the one below has no flight or tail feathers ,you can just see them starting to grow, this is caused by stress in the nest box sometimes ,

I believe that French Moult is caused by something called Polyoma Virus. Birds producing French Moulters or`runners` as we used to call them many years ago should NOT be used for breeding. Fortunately I have none here and have not bred one for many years.

Looks like french moult to me too. He's a dominant pied. He'll be a nice bird if he recovers

Thanks Nev, is there anything I can do to assist him on his way to a full and healthy recovery? Any tonics to boost him up?

Thanks Nev, is there anything I can do to assist him on his way to a full and healthy recovery? Any tonics to boost him up? Sunlight & plenty of high protein food like egg food (if he will eat it). Most birds recover but there are always a few that don't. I think it is irresponsible of a breeder to sell a bird with that condition Good luck

Thanks Nev, we would have never had bought him either to be honest, if we had of known. Let's hope he makes a full recovery. Poor little thing. I rang the breeder and she denied that it was FM, she says he is just young and that his feathers will come through. As you said, irresponsible! Glad there's a forum like this though with supporting members!
This may sound daft, egg food....? As in egg or some egg supplement for birds? Sorry!

Just googled it - crushed boiled egg? Should be ok? You can buy powdered egg food but mashed up hard boiled egg is probably better. Mixing it with some seed & chopped greens might encourage him to eat it
