Hi all, I wonder if anyone could positively tell me the type of budgie this is, I've done a bit of research but to be honest not having much luck. You're the pros.... I know he's a pied, that's about it. He was a big bird and really would like to know the type if anyone can assist. Thanks all in advance,

May sound stupid but if I asked a breeder for that would they know or would have to say a blue or white etc?

Cobalt is the blue colour on your bird.

Hi Nev how do you know by looking at a budgies phenotype if it is a recessive pied or a dominant pied? Also is it possible to tell if a budgie is split pied by looking at its phenotype Thanks Lushen

Hi Nev how do you know by looking at a budgies phenotype if it is a recessive pied or a dominant pied? Also is it possible to tell if a budgie is split pied by looking at its phenotype Thanks Lushen When you have bred as many pieds as I have you'll find that they look totally different. The way the pied patches are distributed are the first clue. On an adult bird the iris ring, colour of beak or feet, and on males the cere colour are all indicators. On a recessive pied or a clearflight expect clear areas on the front of the upper body. The clear areas are usually lower on a dominant pied. Flight feathers are usually clear on dominant and clearflight pieds but they usually have some markings on recessive pieds Sometimes there are clues that show if a normal bird is is split for recessive pied but in most cases there is no visual sign at all. The main indicator is a small clear patch on the back of a normal bird's head. Also occasionally a normal that is split for recessive pied won't develop an iris ring. These are only indicators, the split will still need to be proven by breeding results. If the bird has other mutations they could account for some of these features. Also remember there are exceptions to every rule

Thanks all, we have gone back to our breeder where we bought Albert 4 years ago in Essex. Called her up and she said she has some Colbert baby budgies. We are going to take a look tomorrow. Some of them haven't formed all their feathers yet but she says there ready to go? Is that right? Apparently all eating well and drinking without mum,
Fingers crossed for a nice bird to bring home tomorrow.

I'd give them a miss if I were you

Nev is right. And also as a pet owner, I would only buy at least two months old budgie, needless to say a fully feathered one.

Hi all, i was a bit worried after logging in just now and seeing your comments. Especially after we went to the breeder this morning and bought a little fella. I have uploaded a photo just taken and hope he looks ok. He is certainly active, and eating. Not that tame, but he has only been home an hour. Meet Sydney!

It looks as if Sydney has French Moult. The feathers will eventually moult out, re-grow, and he may then look normal
