I'm sorry to say that Truffle's sister Hazel didn't make it. She did so well and I even arranged for a little check up with the vet, arranged for this morning. But, yesterday morning Hazel passed away. Gone to join Truffle who went 3 weeks ago to the day. I'm so sorry Hazel, I really thought we had pulled you through. Chooks on Flickr

Thank you guys. I feel so helpless and useless, keep losing my chickens through so many different circumstances. It seems it's just me experiencing all these losses. I never knew how hard keeping chooks would be.

It is not something you can be prepared for; such a big learning curve with all the different issues you have had to deal with. Are the Orpingtons more prone to respiratory problems, or perhaps something that these two, coming from the same place, where predisposed towards anyway?? Not a question I expect you are able to answer, but I really do wonder if your choice of chookies isn't adding to your woes. They are so pretty, I can understand your preference, but maybe you need to consider your own ability to keep accepting losses, before looking towards restocking. Or .... finding another breeder. ?? Sorry, Shirls, if that is all a bit maudlin. Big hugs from me.

I too think it is the breeder that is at fault and not you Shirls. You give them the best care you can and if that's not working then it must be weak chickens. Please don't blame yourself. Breeders don't control breeding. They are probably interbred several times over. Be kind to yourself and know they had a good life with you.

My chookie breeder is one of the best. She breeds the best of every breed that she concentrates on. I can't fault her or her knowledge. She judges at shows and really knows her stuff. All chickens are prone to respiratory problems and they all, I understand, have weak hearts. None of my breeders chooks are interbred, she keeps them all separate and as I said 'knows her stuff'. I think my latest losses are due to poor ventilation in the coop.
Orpingtons, particularly Buff Orpingtons, are a hardy stock and I feel that the Blue Orpingtons (Truffle and Hazel) are not of the same ilk because of breeding in the special colour.

I am glad that is the case, Shirls. We do need to be able to trust in those we deal with, and you obviously feel that the breeder you deal with is one of the good ones. That is good to know. xx

I think again when you start changing or watering down a breed such as the buff orpington to a different colour it may inherit other problems as a result? What breed of chicken do you put to a buff to get the blue colour Shirls?
