I've decided to get a parakeet for company. I'm retired and home most all day, most every day. Have read it's best to get a recently weaned bird from a GOOD breeder but finding one seems a little tricky. I'm in Memphis Tennessee, USA and don't drive. The budgie breeders directories I've found online have so far not been helpful so if you know of a breeder in my neck of the woods, or a directory or association that might help please let me know. Is it safe to have a bird shipped? Seems like the heat inside a package delivery van during a Southern summer day would be deadly.
There is a Petco store very nearby so I'm thinking of just going there but welcome any opinions or suggestions on the subject.
Also, many years ago heard about a pet parakeet flying into a pot of simmering spaghetti sauce. Is this a common risk. Asking because I hope my bird will have free run of the apartment but no way to keep him out of kitchen.
Anyway, thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi welcome to the forum. Sorry I cant help with breeders in the USA. Maybe if you found an avian vet near you they might be able to put you in touch with breeders. I dont think a kitchen is a very safe place to have a budgie flying about. Good luck in your search.
