He's doing GREAT. I got him into his new big cage and out of my friend's travel cage, and he's been flapping and hopping and climbing and yelling and singing and fighting with his toys (in the tiny travel cage he wouldn't interact with his toys at all, I think because if he set them swinging or moving there was nowhere to get away from them). We've progressed to him putting both feet on my finger in order to get at spray millet, though he still panics, bites, and flies away if I move the supporting hand at all. We're working on it very gently.
He's a healthy, friendly little pal who hops from one side to another to talk to any people who are in the room and sings his head off all day. My biggest challenge has been trying to keep his sleep schedule long enough - I just graduated and my roommate's still in school, so there are people around and moving well after reasonable bird bedtimes. Once he's finger-trained better I think I'm going to start putting him to bed in a secondary cage in a quiet room.
He's often alone 9 - 6, and I know I need to get him a buddy. I still want to wait until he's finger-trained enough to get in and out of the cage safely for exercise. If I keep working consistently, I think I might be able to get him there in 2-3 weeks, based on how fast he seems to adapt to things now.
I'm in the US and I think a lot of people here are in AU or the UK, but how would you recommend getting a second bird? I'm dubious of the birds at big chain pet stores, and on craigslist people seem to be responsibly only rehoming birds in pairs. I definitely think suddenly having three birds is too much. I have no idea how to find a breeder, or to tell who's a good breeder. Does anyone have any advice? Is there a better subboard for that here?

Pictures of him in the super long cage! I had a very specific place that the cage needed to fit, so I got kind of an unusually-shaped one.

Sorry, but I don't know who might be able to help you with finding a single bird to keep this little fella company. Surely there are going to be single birds who have perhaps lost a mate and need a friend? Why not put your own advert up requesting a single bud for your lonely fellow? It might put you in touch with a breeder even, or simply someone in a similar situation as yours.

That is so fantastic, you both are doing so well. Brilliant news that you will get your little man a friend as you are out such a lot. A littl tip - put some newspaper on the floor of the cage, makes for easier cleaning for you. Don't bother spending money on sand sheets either as they are not good for budgie feet. Have you decided upon a name yet?

Good luck with finding him a friend. He's a beautiful little budgie. I've recently got my Squawk a friend (Chirpy) as I'm out at work most days. It was a good decision for him.

I love this cage for him . So many people buy tall and narrow cages which are completely wrong, at least he has room to fly back and forward
