Because it's not a bird, it's half a house.

What type of bird is it Hezz? It is one of our scrub turkeys jellybean .... on the ground .... This is an old photo I had taken, with them feeding with the peaceful doves; Marianne had circled the doves so they were easier to see. For some reason, known only to themselves, quite a few of them decided to take to the trees yesterday. I now have lots of dead twigs lying around on the ground under where they were. They are big, they are heavy, and they are not very graceful!

There maybe method in the madness. The branch is so thin that if a ground predator should attempt to get the turkey the branch would break.! Clever thinking or what.

They have no ground predators, OP. They are too big for that, and while awkward, they are quite capable of taking to the trees if needed. My poor Hoppy Girl often does it often because there is one, if not two, bullies who keep hunting her when she comes in for a free feed. For some time we had a back door liasion happening, but the others have now cottoned on to this. We will work something else out, between us.
