A single bird can possibly lose bond with human when introduced to another bird which is not tame, or if they breed together. But the chances are very slim.

My cockatiel was hand tame when I first got him, but once he met my untame budgies, I haven't been able to get near him like that again. It would be impossible to try to train him again unless I seperated him completely from the budgies.
I suspect that if the new bird was also hand tame, then that would be fine, as I know of people who have two hand tame cockatiels who are equally bonded with their owners as with each other.

Sorry to hear that Starling. I am surprised that a cockatiel would lose that bond with a human. Everything I have learnt about them and heard from people with them is that they are usually the other way - bond too well, and it is this that causes trouble. How long had you had him before you got the budgies?
Kath, I would echo Starling's suggestion, that you get another hand tamed one, and remember your son is still going to have to go through the quarantine procedure, so there is some time there for him to work on both birds. If the new bird is already comfortable around humans, I am sure progress would be reasonably quick. Of course a lot will depend on how much time he spends with the birds.
