My brother has two Hermann tortoises: Mavis and Derek. They live in his back garden in an enclosure with wooden sleepers and have a hut they go under at night to hide and sleep. My brother told me yesterday that Derek is 'gone'. I can't see how he could have got out unless a bird has had him. I was so upset I went round to his house and conducted my own search of the garden and next door's garden. No luck. My brother doesn't seem upset: I don't understand it. He is an animal lover like myself, but he just said there is nothing that he can do. Just no compassion, it upset me more. I made and printed some posters and posted them last night with my husband through the letterboxes of everyone who lives on his block, asking them to look in their gardens and call me if they find him. No one has called, I don't think they will.
I just wanted to acknowledge Derek because he was loved and mattered to me. It seems to me I am the only one who actually loved him. My brother went through a divorce at the beginning of last year and as he works on a rig, three week on three weeks off, it was me who went around daily when he was away to feed them. Derek was only three.
Mavis is unconcerned which is good, I don't want her distressed. She tends to hid more under the hut in the daytime, whereas Derek would always go out and hide in the long grass. Not knowing what has happened to him is heart breaking. I cried last night as I wondered what has become of him.

He has found him! Derek dug a hole under the grass and buried himself. He sent me a video I will try to upload it when I get home, I'm on my mobile at the minute. The relief I feel is undescribable!!

You're right! She knew!
The brother is moving house soon so Derek is now inside in a hut until he moves.
Just so relieved, it's like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

So glad that Derek is alive and well; just up to everyday tortoise-y things. What a relief!

I lost a tortoise and 7 years later my neighbour found him in the field behind our house. We realised he had been in our garden the whole time and only left when the chickens cleared the garden of food he ate, weeds basically. We found a hole under the fence where he had dug out.I still have him now along with another one.

Love this happy ending . Particularly because my daughter is looking after a 46 year old girl tortoise called Phoebe at the moment. Everyone has fallen hook line and sinker for her, she cocks her little head to listen when you talk to her and if she is in the garden and you call her she literally comes running, i never knew they could run so fast

They are incredible creatures. There was one in the vets the other week and the owner was saying how when he winks at her she winks back! Amazing.
As from tomorrow I'm looking after them for next three weeks. I'm thinking of bring them to mine, Mavis is still outside as I don't want the same to happen to her whilst in my care.
I've not uploaded the video yet, but I will because it's just - wow - only word to describe it.

Starlingqueen what pets do you have? Husband always wanted chickens, he grew up in countryside. I'd love them too but not with the dogs, Alfie would eat them.

I have 4 chickens. 2 Tortoises, a bearded dragon, 4 budgies, 1 cockatiel, 1 guinea pig, 1 collared dove, 1 hahns macaw, an African grey and a dog. Getting a bit low now, we used to have 23. Moving house soon so don't want to get more just yet. Thinking about having some finches.
