This is Pippy, the canary. She is a lovely little thing, an absolute delight .... not finger-tamed but seemingly unfazed by me going about her daily ablutions. She will whistle back if I sit and whistle to her. She is constantly in motion so a decent photo was not easy .... I deleted about eight before getting this one. .... and two little lovies called .... Bluey and Greeny who are oh so very timid, poor little things. They really do freak out when I am changing paper, water etc. Their cage is not good as well, and not much in the way of toys, no swing etc. I understand they have been "rescued" from another home so have no idea what they have been subjected to so far in their lives. But, beside the cage being rather lacking, they are loved and looked after. I intend to gently suggest that a new cage is needed and a few more toys wouldn't go astray. Because the lady loves them, she may be open to suggestions and simply not realise that rust can kill them. The three are with me until the 21st August, so 11 days all up.

Aw bless. Love to hear canaries sing, they have such a beautiful song. Poor little lovies, hope the owner acts upon your suggestions. Do you provide a 'birdy' holiday home then Hezz?

Pippy is a little cracker Hezz. Is she a Border canary? The two love birds are beautiful. When their time is up these little ones won't want to go home, you'll spoil them rotten.

I am starting to, Shirls; I had intended to do more so, but got more work where I am so am only, at the moment, doing so by word of mouth. You might remember that I was doing something similar for Crackers, the long billed corella? Lovely visitors as always. I love canaries, they're so sweet Lovely Lovies too. Are they usually timid? Pippy is such an easy visitor; the lovies .... I think not normally so timid and can be quite lovely companions, but these two are really shy. I have actually just spent about 45 minutes with their cage in the bath, a bucket of dish washing detergent and a scrubbing brush. A lot of what I thought was rust was actually dirt. It still isn't completely restored, and yes, there is a small amount of rust that can be covered over with the right product, but it is now out to dry, while the lovies are in my cage of the same size and hopefully not feeling too spooked that their home has been rearranged.

Did you have to move them to the other cage by hand?

Did you have to move them to the other cage by hand? Ha, ha ..... no, not really ... my cage and theirs are exactly the same so just lifted the big doors of both with the cages face-to-face, doors aligned and open, and .... because they are so timid, they only needed my hand around the back of their cage for one to fly into the other cage. The second one followed close behind. I also gave them a swing in case they might like to try one out. They are so sweet and beautiful, I just want to make friends ................. but that is not going to happen in just over a week!

Poor timid things.
Bluey and Greeny are not great names are they? George and Basil were Greenbird and Bluebird (even though Basil is not blue!)
Do you know their sexes? I don't know how you tell with a lovebird.

No, loveies are not able to be told apart from anything external. The owner felt that the blue bird was possibly the girl and the yellow/green the boy, just going by their actions.

Well more like a sanctuary than bird sitting - they must think they have come to a 5 star hotel after what you do for them Hezz!

Sorry, jellybean; I missed your post; To be honest, I have no idea. I thought a canary was a canary, although I did realise that they aren't all solid yellow. I'm not even sure that her owners know.

Well more like a sanctuary than bird sitting - they must think they have come to a 5 star hotel after what you do for them Hezz! They are probably sick to death of me sticking my nose around the door. I am sure they would like a shingle to hang out, saying "Please Do Not Disturb". I am fairly confident I have heard "thank Gad she's gone now" conversations when I leave the room.

How lovely , your very lucky to be able to do it Hezz, and so are they . Ive been asked several times to board birds via my daughters furry pet boarding business but i just haven't got the spare rooms to do it with the conservatory being next to useless in the summer

What a shame, skysmum. We are basically empty nesters now, except for when younger laddy is home from uni, and his room has become the budgies' bedroom in the meantime. So we still have one other room in the house that I generally use for my own - sewing, reading and whatever. It is a nice bright room, as well. I have moved Pippy's cage so that she gets a small amount of sun for about half an hour in the mornings, coming through the screens, not the glass, so I think she is enjoying that. I put the lovies back into their own cage yesterday. They weren't nearly so keen to repeat the cage exchange process, but we got there in the end. I was going to leave them in mine since they had already used it and it will still need a wash, but they spent all night hung off the sides in a corner, rather than in their coconut or even on a perch, so felt they might not have felt at ease in my cage. My perches run a different way, I don't know whether would have put them off.
