After reading about one of our members loosing a budgie I thought we should all be aware of the importance of spotting and saving a sick birds life.
Every bird keeper should have a first aid box, when illness strikes it strikes fast.
How do we spot that illness, any fluffed up bird with the exception of a bird that is clearly over heated on a hot day must have guesstimate meds and attention immediatlly , later may be too late.
Your bird with a normal high body temperature needs immediate heat , my propagator will rise to the high 80s F and this alone has saved many birds.
This is your first guestimate med, heat...............Your second guestimate med is too supply guardian angel, this is not any good placed in a dish or water fountain, it must be syringed or crop dosed via a needle , at least three times a day, from the left hand side of the birds beak , over the tongue and then down into the crop, thus missing the windpipe and drowning your bird.
Birds vomiting are normally suffering from canker or megabacteria, thricho plus will save yout bird from canker if caught early, a megabac bird will live for months and then die, i have never heard of one recovering.
Baytril will not help birds with these diseases.
Soak a millet spray and offer this to your sick bird.
Every day morning and night walk your birds looking for something that is not right , moving a bird from A to B can cause it to become stressed , this is the number one biggest killer of budgerigars. They don't eat , their droppings turn green and they need that immediate guestimate meds, this will save them.
Vets , not my favourite subject, "the baytril subscribers" is a more apt description.
When taking a bird to the vet do include some recent droppings and DEMAND a crop swab, failure to do may mean the remainer of your birds may be infected with some unknown disease.
If you do have a problem I do not mind you ringing me for advice, i am not a vet but i do have a lot of experience.
