Helloooo all so our budgie still without a name (we just can't seem to settle on one) is doing well now thankfully after a rough start. I think he must be around 8 weeks or so now. He is very sweet and doesn't mind hopping on our hands in the cage but he will not come out. He is very happy sitting all day long quietly on his swing. His swing hangs is near the door of the cage so if I try to take him out he quickly gets right back on it again. I don't know if I should move the swing. It is possible he could become that attached to it? He is also not tempted by millet. I have tried leaving the cage door open for him to come out when ready but he does not move off the swing. If I do get him out and hide the cage he will sit quietly on my shoulder and sometimes bites me on the nose hard! Are these things usual?

Do you have an updated photo of your little budgie?
I'm wondering if he cannot fly yet and is a little insecure hence wanting to stay in his cage.
I wouldn't worry about him not wanting to come out yet, he'll get more curious.
Try interacting with him when he's in his cage, so that he stays used to your hands.

Oh I see. I just wondered because the op said he sits on her shoulder when he's removed from the cage. He does look very young.

Hi Nope his wings have not been clipped and he can fly. When I can get him out the cage and off the swing he wants to go straight back to his cage if he sees it, if I move the cage he will sit on my shoulder or anywhere quietly. Here is a picture I have just taken. Should I leave the swing in the cage? I wonder whether it is time to introduce a new toy which may change his focus. Also how do I stop him biting me me on my lip or nose when I talk to him? ![](https://s1.postimg.org/29e3crctej/IMG_2600.jpg)

Poss stupid question but being so young does he know what millet is?! when mine was a baby he had obviously never seen millet before, just looked at it/ me with a 'Well what do you want me to do with that?' expression. Also, does he understand the concept of a cage door, that he can go through it? Again, mine had no idea. If he doesn't, he may just be jumping back onto his swing as that's his fave/ safe/ nearest spot. Does he have other toys?

He will just feel safe on th swing, my new bird Boris didn’t like to come out at first and would jump back in every time, then one day he sort of got pushed out by Buddy and he had to fly or fall, he flew and no there is no stopping him. I’m sure your bird will gain confidence and venture out soon, keep encouraging him with his favourite treats.

The cage definitely needs some more toys. Starrymist's post basically has said what I was going to - does he know what millet is, and what is a door for, from the bird's point of view? He knows you bring things in and out through it, but hasn't associated that hole with him going in and out. Also if it is a small door, he will be twice as reluctant to go through it - it will feel confining to him. Once he has built up his confidence and feels more at home, he will be happy to come and go, but at the moment the cage is his secure place.
Edit: don't take his swing away.

Hi thank you all for the great advice. I will put some more toys in but want to introduce them slowly so he doesn't get nervous and will continue to try to encourage him out the cage with millet and green leafy herbs, he loves dill and parsley. I think he needs time he is a little sweetie 🙂
