Hello everyone I wanted to write an update about our little bird. He is still very timid. I can sometimes get him to come and sit on the edge of his cage when the door is open and he will come and have a little fly but always straight back and into the cage and onto his swing. He gets very upset if he can't see his cage and he is next to impossible to entice off the swing. I am not sure what else I can do do get him to trust me. I sit and talk to him, I blink at him, I encourage, give him treats but he doesn't show any curiousity and is not interested in forming a bond. He seems most happy sitting quietly on his swing ALL day long he doesn't even seem to want our company. What can I do? I did not have this with my last two budgies so I am not sure when he is like this.

Hi Flowers. You are doing the right things so far, but perhaps not often enough. 1) Is there anything outside your little birdies cage to encourage him to come out and play? Like toys, a play frame, perches to land on? 2) Have you tried putting your hand in his cage, every day, frequently, and bearing millet as a treat? Have you tried putting any veggies in his cage, like hanging up a piece of wet basil? Do this regularly, take it out after 3 or 4 hours, but do it frequently and he will get to know what it is and use it as a shower, or eat it. Perseverence and regular interaction from you will eventually make him feel more comfortable with you. Hope this helps answer your question.

Hi Shirls Thank you for helping I am really flummoxed by him. He just seems happy to sit on his swing very quietly most of the day. I give him fresh greens in his cage each day but have not put anything on top of his cage on the outside so will try this. He doesn't mind my hand too much but will bite pretty often. He isn't interested in millet at all. I have never known a bird like it. I took him out earlier by picking him up and he went crazy to get back into his cage again. If he steps up on my finger from the swing I can't then bring him out the cage he flys straight back to the swing again. Funny little bird!

He is probably a shy, quiet little bird by nature; they have such diverse personalities, just like humans. Be patient, give all, expect nothing in return and allow him to learn to trust you. He had a rough start so trust may not come easily. Keep interacting with him but don't try to push him. I am sure he will warm up given enough time - it may take 12 months, or more.

If he steps up on my finger from the swing I can't then bring him out the cage he flys straight back to the swing again. Funny little bird! My new bird Boris is similar to this as in I can’t get him to stay on my finger to bring him out, he just jumps straight off again. He has started coming out but on his own, I open all the doors of the cage and he eventually comes out and flies about. I put him a play stand just outside the door with a ladder connecting them and he seemed to feel safer with this. He still doesn’t like to stay with me for more than a second but he will step up inside the cage with no trouble. I have found though he loves a bath which is on top of the cage. I too try every day. He is though very attached to Buddy my other bird, there is a real bromance going on. Funny little buds. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
