They are all looking well there. Have they all merged as one flock now or do the newbies still get pushed around? Would it be anything to do with the cold weather the lack of eggs?

Great pictures Shirls. Holy moly, it must be a nightmare when these girls moult It certainly is and they seem to have been moulting forever!! In the Spring though, all the parent wild birds come down and take all the fluffy feathers away to line their nests. The last couple of months it has looked like someone has emptied their duvet in the garden. I keep picking them up and putting them in the incineraor.

It''s very strange Colin, they all sit together in the sun, they all snuggle up together in the coop at night time, but out in the garden when they are doing their chickeny things they seem to go round in two groups. It is a known fact that chickens don't lay quite so much in the winter, but mine seem to have given up altogether. However, the babies haven't laid their first egg yet, so that should be quite imminent (she says with her fingers crossed!!) Dusty has an excuse as she has been very poorly and it has only been this week that I can say she is fully recovered ---- her poos ( ) are now completely back to normal. Thanks for asking Colin.

I say it has taken Dusty a while to recover, but at least she has. By the sounds of it the chooks are as difficult as the buds to understand. If you didn't already know that bird feathers are good for putting in the compost bin. They apparently have nitrogen in them. It will keep the compost heap warm as well. That's good for the bacteria.

Yes chickens are just as complex as the budgies Colin. Wow!!!! I did not know that about the feathers. I just assumed they would take absolutely ages to decompose. They will go on my lovely new compost heap now, thank you for the info.

Don't overdo it Shirls. Mix a bit of other stuff in as well. Did you know egg shells can go in the compost as well. Smash them up and mix them in.

I just found another titbit, you can put your chicken poop in there as well. The list of stuff you shouldn't put in your compost is much, much shorter than what you can put in.

Yes OP, I did realise what else you can put on the compost, I just didn't know about feathers. How come you know all this? ? Most of my egg shells go back to the chickens, I mash them up and it makes good grit and of course improves the shells of the eggs they lay. My compost is probably more chicken poo than anything else too!!! (Well not really!!) Thanks for the info though.

How come I know all this stuff!, Shirls. Well one day when I had no driving licence anymore I thought how am i going to get all these grass and hedge trimmings to the recycle center. Ding! I'll start composting. so asked Mr Google how to do it. I have been reading about it ever since.Whe the buds were in full flow moulting I asked if I could put the feathers in the compost, you know what, yes I can. So now when they are moulting I use my Dyson handheld and vac them all up. Into the compost the go. I thought I might get multicoloured compost, but alas no. Anyway from the first moment I started composting I have never stopped reading about it. I have tried most of it and it always works. There you have it.
