Didn't quite know where to put this but its a general topic (ish) so why not in the lounge ;D On the way back from a pub lunch with the family we went to a garden centre on the way back. They have a pet shop there too and they had budgies for sale. Two little hens were in a cage on their own next to a cockatiel. I went over to say hello (as us crazy budgie owners do ) and went "uh-oh" They both had the tell-tale yellow crustyness on their ceres aka MITES, one more than the other. So I approached a guy who works there and asked "do you know much about budgies?" to which he said yes of course. So I told him "well those two budgies there have scaley mites and should not be for sale, they also should be quarantined and treated for it) He shot over to take a look and said thank you several times He did move them but only into a breeding cage type of cage...next to some other budgies grrr. He picked up the rubbish scaley lotion they sell in pet shops, which I presume he is going to treat them with. Can't see it working but as much as I wanted to offer to take them off his hands and treat them myself, well I don't have the room to quarantine them. He did seem to care and said that they wouldn't be selling them but I don't believe that he had a clue what to do really. So that was my semi-good deed for the day, just wish I could go back and rescue them.

Good for you Rachael, they don't expect anyone to notice these things, and most of the customers wouldn't,so that told him, ha ha, well done......

Nice one Rachael.
Monty had scaly mites when we got him. Of course I had no idea at the time. As soon as I had researched on the internet he got treated and recovered. Wonder how common it is from pet shop bought birds?

Wonder how common it is from pet shop bought birds? To be fair this is the first time I have seen a budgie for sale with scaley mites, but most of the shop I have been in that sell budgies seem to look after them really well. I won't ever be buying from the garden centre though, they should be more careful to check the condition of the birds they have for sale. I am tempted to ring up to see what they have done with the budgies.

If you have the time and get the chance, you could always go for a wee stroll down by their way......

If you have the time and get the chance, you could always go for a wee stroll down by their way...... A wee stroll would be at least an hours walk one way lol Besides if I did I don't think I would be able to resist bringing them home which would be a really bad idea.

An hour's walk with a budgie in a box would be pushing the the friendship a little. Just that a phone call is too easy to palm off.
