That's okay. A lot of things the pet shops try to sell are really unnecessary but they will try to convince you anyway. Sandpaper on perches is also just as bad. If your bird has natural perches and cuttlebone and mineral block there shouldn't be an issue with his beak or claws growing too long. Even paper towels on the bottom of his cage is good - we just promote newspaper as most times people have it already and it is a great way to recycle some.

Sorry for your loss.
I don't know what it feels like, am not sure I ever will, with keeping several budgies.
Not to the point of not being able to cope.
I hope you feel better. It always makes it easier getting another pet after one has died.
As for fruit and veg, apples, grapes, orange, peas, carrots... Do a google search for a further list. I've given up on trying to get mine to eat fruit and veg. They'd rather starve than eat it.

Thanks Sam was just about to go there. Marianne has also put together a great eggfood recipe, which is good for them when they are moulting as feathers take so much energy to produce and grow properly. The earlier you get him eating different things the more likely he is to take to them. If he doesn't seem interested, try eating some yourself in front of him. (Or pretending to) He will think he is missing out then.

Brilliant news! Mine always have their breakfast when the boys eat their cereal, I've always found that quite amusing. Buddy is coming along well, is it just a week you've had him?
