I wasn't really sure where to put this thread... so I put it here, hope it's in the right section... Anyway, I'm planning on getting a budgie or two (as pets) come September time and I was researching into which colours I might get. At the moment, I really like the look of the violet ones, like this >>> cdn.pimpmyspace.org/media/pms/c/oj/zv/u6/m_internet.jpg and either the blue pied ones >>> www.officialbarrieshuttbudgerigars.com/-%20New%20Folder%20%285%29/blue%20recessive%20pieds.jpg or the pure white ones. It's/They're going to be male, because i've read multiple times that females bicker and bite harder. At the moment, i'm trying to plan how much all of this (Cage, food, toys, budgies etc) might cost, so I was wandering what the prices might be like for those colours. Or would it vary a lot from breeder to breeder? Also, are there any breeders in the Gloucester (Glouscestershire) or Taunton (Somerset) area that breed these colourations? Thanks

Around how much? £10? £50? What would be the average, in your opinion?

I rung 92 chicks last year and a couple of young albinos a few days ago. I breed for pleasure and not showing so my birds are relatively cheap. I get £6 each from the dealers and sell others here to callers for £12. The local pet shops charge £15 for theirs [which may have been some of mine.] I try to combine various mutations mainly of the Blue series to have a more attractive product to sell and also for my own amusement. Being 78 , partially sighted and on an electric scooter my birds are an interest to me here on site so to speak. I bred some type 2 yellow-faced albinos last year which are pretty also some dominant violet pieds. I am hoping to put the yellow-faces on the violet pieds this season.

aw cute especially that bluey one on the end. Whereabouts are you? I'm in the gloucestershire area at the moment, but will be around either somerset area or in portsmouth come july/august/september. Would you be breeding any without the yellow-faces this season?

I live in Cumbria adjacent to the M6 motorway. I will have ordinary white faced blues as well as spangles, dominant pieds, albinos and whitewings, also green series spangles and dominant green pieds. Some pairs are laying at the moment but I will have more breeding pairs together later on.

Blues generally have alot of good character from experience. I love my pieds but I'm totally biast to violets, I bred my own and they are stunning! Blues are cheaper, violet are harder to produce and you can be looking up to £60 for a GOOD violet bird, show grade. General pet types, anything from £5 private to £30 in a pet shop. Cages can be obtained second hand for £10-40 and new, £15-100 depending on quality and size. Perches, go out and get some willow or ash for free. Seed pots are anything around £2 each, plastic ones less, metal ones more if bigger. The outlay is the most pricey bit, birds are cheap after that. There is a whole section on the budgie society page and there's a list of breeders there; www.budgerigarsociety.com/pet_budgerigar_breeders.aspHopefully you'll find one nearby. Soph.
